Aug-24-23  escral: Hello, my name is Ralph Eschbach, I did indeed beat Kevin in Nanaimo, however, this is not the game. I recently came across my written chess score. The Nanaimo game was an Alekhine's defence...I was pretty stoked, my rating at the time was about 1400 (back in the day ratings were updated infrequently, I was about 1800 very fast), plus Kevin was playing about 9 games, which meant I should have been crushed like a bug. The game here, was held at UVic. Kevin had 36 opponents, and he seriously wanted to beat me. (I know because I was driving Kevin around the Island and we were together on the ferry, so I got the whole story). As one can see from the game, things didn't go Kevin's way at all. I computer-checked the game and the computer was pretty happy, in fact it criticized one of Kevin's moves. Side note, I played 2 more games, Vancouver Pacific Centre Mall, and West Vancouver Park Royal Mall Kevin played c4 both times (for whatever reason I had trouble getting positions I liked, my go to Black opening was the Gruenfeld, but c4 can force a line where Black is worse, the KID wasn't my friend either. Anyway, even though Kevin had 60+ opponents, he smashed me, typical GM-Anon type destruction, which Kevin warned me about,,,he said I wasn't going to keep winning. I played one other game at Nanaimo, it was a typical Alekhine walkover, Still 2 out of 5 is pretty good. Kevin was massively strong in 1986. I discussed this with Alexander Cherniaev, who claimed he was Karpov's second for about 20 years; I looked on Google and I couldn't find out for sure, anyway Cherniaev thought Kevin was top 10 in the world in 1986...then Alexander asked to please play in a simul that was scheduled, nothing exciting a typical GM crush, but I didn't drop anything. By the way, is anyone interested in the other game that I won against Kevin, it's a reasonable game, I think Kevin transposed something in the opening. If anyone actually, I can figure out how to get it on the site. Cheers!
Aug-24-23  escral: Hi this is after looking at a Stockfish evaluation, the earlier computer report must have been from a weaker computer. Almost every move in my game is wrong...lol.
