Recognizing the finish is one of the basic secrets of success in chess...Exchange (sacrifice) and Double Attack, in this case a bishop fork. Combinations are the heart of chess; make forcing moves that the opponent must respond to. (Examine all possible checks is a must, which is not to say that one should actually play all possible checks, but at least consider such. One should also consider all possible captures, especially captures with check or that threaten to check on the next move.) More attacking concepts are to take aim at a more important piece of greater value, as well as unprotected units, and units in line with royalty. These are some of the seeds of tactical destruction.
