Oct-19-05  Poisonpawns: Tal blunders on his last move and loses gm 1 of the 1965 canidates semi-finals.He was worse already but 41..Rhg8? runs into the powerful 42.Nf8!winning if 42..Bxf8 43.Bxd6! wins,42..Rgxf8 43.Bxd6! or Rbxf8 43.Bxd6! and The mating theme on the 6th and 7th ranks cannot be stopped without huge loss of material.

NM JRousselle: 42 Nf8?? loses to Rc7. The correct move is the simple Bd6.
Nov-11-20  Gaito: There seems to be a disagreement about the sealed move. In his book on the match, IM Román Toran assures that the sealed move was 41. R1c6, but in another book by Hilary Thomas, the move 41...Rhc8 is given as the sealed move. Stockfish 12 gives the following variation: 41...Rhc8 42. Bxd6 Bxd6 43. Rxd6 Rxc7 44. Nxc7+ Ke7 45. Re6+ with evaluation of +6.04. On the other hand, IM Roman Torán, in his excellent book on the 1965 Candidates matches, gives the variation 41....Nc8 42.Nc5 Kf7 43. Nb7! Rh6 44. Nd8+ Re8 45. Ne6 Nb6 46. Rxe7+! Kxe7 47. Bxd6+ with decisive advantage. But Toran assumes that the move 41...Rhc8 was never played, since according to him the sealed move was 41 R1c6.

Retireborn: I would tend to assume that Tal sealed 41...Rhc8 and then resigned without resuming. The sealed move counts as part of the game, even if never actually played at the board.

Toran, working from a score that shows 41.R1c6 as the last moved played at the board, assumes (perhaps wrongly) that it was sealed.

Feb-06-22  erixn: Just to put the record straight: Larsen himself (Skakbladet, 1965/9) states that the last move played was indeed 41. R1c6, and that Tal sealed 41.-,Rhc8, but resigned without resuming the game, since 42.Bxd6 leads to an easily won N-endgame.
