  Honza Cervenka: After 27.Kh1 with idea 27...Bxe4 28.Rxe4 Rxb2 29.Nh6+ Kg7 30.Nxf7 Kxf7 31.Bh5+ Ke6 32.Rxb4! (32.Bxe8 Nd3 ) 32...Bxb4 33.Bxe8 Rxa2 black would have been a pawn up, but white should keep a draw in this endgame thanks to the presence of Bishops of different colours.
Nov-23-04  alexandrovm: it looks like checkmate, good game by Vitaly
Feb-22-09  Hugh the Drover: At the end, the Queens are gone. But a galaxy of other pieces hover over Tal's checkmated white King, with Tseshkovsky's Rook, Bishop and Knight as the Rat Pack, imposing his will rather forcefully.

Tseshkovsky believes, I've heard, that copyrights should obtain in a player's games. But it is said that the game and its positions are akin to a box score in sports (a neutral or fair record, I guess; akin to a box score in baseball which in early innings one cannot almost reconstruct the game). Certainly Michael Jordan's buzzer beater over Cleveland is copyrighted, or Joe Montana's pass to Dwight Clark to defeat Dallas. Ignoring the implications (eg, a royalty owing from this site), I'm sort of liking or leaning towards granting the copyright, or thinking it valid (on intellectual grounds).

I've seen a few other picturesque games by Tseshkovsky (Rook and Knight endings). This one is as worthy as any game of chess to copyright. (Many if not most games one would not seek to copyright.)

Feb-22-09  Hugh the Drover: The Knight being Chairman of the Board here, Dino the Rook doing lookout.
Feb-22-09  Hugh the Drover: And on the black commission above, I missed the obvious, but Joey Bishop is laying low in the wings, ready to help if there's any trouble.
Feb-22-09  Hugh the Drover: I think I'm mixing up Tseshkovsky and Sveshnikov on the copyright issue. The latter supports copyright protection for chess players' games and positions. My bad. (I also see similarities between Tchaikovsky and Kalinnikov in listening to classical music, perhaps the source of my mix-up.)
Apr-15-09  Hugh the Drover: At the end, the Queens are gone, but a galaxy of other pieces hover like bright lights in Vegas, a veritable Rat Pack, with Frankie the Knight doing the honors, Dino the Rook covering Frankie, and Joey Bishop lying low waiting to help if there's any trouble. Sammy is out there somewhere. Peter Falk is also out there (on a6 playing dumb) with a view of the entire situation.

(Re-formulated.)

Jan-15-12  tjipa: Rest in peace, Vitaly Valeryevich. I saw him in Riga 1979 interzonals which was played on the stage of the newly built Daile theatre (stunning architecture by Marta Stana). Having just learned of Tseshkovsky's demise, I had a look at some of his games and stumbled upon this, probably one of the most awkward losses in Tal's career.Anyway, Tseshkovsky was a great GM and coach of Kramnik.
