Honza Cervenka: I like how Tal's Knight went twice to c2 with devasting effect. I wonder if 18.Nd2 was necessary but other options do not look much better for white, who was already in troubles there. Tal apparently was able to play excellent positional chess and be pragmatic materialist, of course with superb tactical insight. Young Beliavsky got no chance here.

Maybe White was worried about the loose bishop on c4 after something like the natural 18.a5 Be4 19.Ne4 Qc4, but he seems to get some play with 20.Qg4.

<...Tal apparently was able to play excellent positional chess and be pragmatic materialist, of course with superb tactical insight...>

He couldn't have been successful at the super GM level without being able to play well positionally. The stereotype of Tal being a pure attacker is just that.
