Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-17-05  Whitehat1963: An excellent game, worthy of study, that also features the opening of the day.
Jan-25-07  blegaspi: I actually watched this game live since I was a student in London at the time. Being a Filipino chess buff in the early 70s, Torre was always someone I respected. When Vaganian moved 23 ... g5, I couldn't believe Torre's Q was lost. I heard somebody comment to this effect. Torre's expression was "How could I have fallen for this?"

After resigning, he was signing autographs and I told him "Nadale tayo sa g5." He replied "Mayroon din pala dito! Oo nga, lamang pa naman ako noon!" (Rough translation: That g5 got us. I didn't know there were [Filipinos] here. Yes, and I was leading at the time.)

<zan> i like your story.. :)

Jun-19-10  zanshin: <word> A couple of years later, I bumped into him in the airport in the Netherlands. I reminded him we had met before. He was polite enough to pretend he remembered me ... I was sure he didn't ;-)
Apr-16-23  christian.jimenez.79: The endgame of this one, is quite confusing. I have the impression Vaganian could have won earlier and easier, but that somehow, he also got confused at some stage. Very nice win, nevertheless, playing a Benko gambit in quite different fashion than the regular positions arising from this opening, and playing against a quite creative opening plan from Torre.
