  Honza Cervenka: 32...exd5 33.Qxd5+ Ke8 (33...Bd6 34.exd6 is not much better) 34.Bg6+ Kf8 35.Qf7# could be a finish here. 32...Kc6 33.Qxe6+ Kb7 34.Rd7 is quite clear as well.

Honza Cervenka: 25...g5 was bad but white threatened with 26.Qxh6 as the Queen cannot be taken for 27.Rg8#.

24...Ne7! could hold the position.

Aug-29-24  mel gibson: I knew that pawn on g5 had to be taken but by which piece?

Stockfish 16.1 declines the Knight and says:
26. Nxg5

(26. Nxg5 (1.Nxg5 Ne3 2.Rxe3 hxg5 3.Rxg5 f6 4.exf6 Qxh7 5.Rxc5 Rd8 6.Qxb4 Rd1+ 7.Re1 Rxe1+ 8.Qxe1 Qe4 9.f3 Qxe1+ 10.Bxe1 Rc8 11.Bc3 Kf7 12.h4 Bd7 13.Rh5 Rxc3 14.bxc3 Kxf6 ) +7.67/42 319)

score for White +7.67 depth 42.

If I force SF to accept the Knight:

26. Nxg5 hxg5
27 Qxg5

27. Qxg5 (27. Qxg5 (1.Qxg5 Ke8 2.Qg8+ Kd7 3.Qxf7+ Be7 4.Bf5 Qd8 5.Qxe6+ Kc7 6.Rg7 Kb8 7.Rxe7 Nxe7 8.Bxe7 Qd7 9.Qxd7 Bxd7 10.Bxd7 Rc4 11.Be6 Rd4 12.Bg5 Ra7 13.h4 Rg7 ) +11.62/40 362)

score for White +11.62 depth 40.

Aug-29-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: King's sequence seems lethal: 26. Nxg5 hxg5 27. Qxg5... Otherwise, 26... Ke8 27. Nxe6 fxe6 28. Qxh6 and still W attack is strong.
Aug-29-24  vajeer: <mel gibson> interesting that SF chooses 32...Ne3. However, I am wondering whether 27. Nxe6+ may be stronger reply in this line. For example - 26...Ne3 27. Nxe6+ fxe6 28. fxe3 Qxh7 29. Qf2+ Ke8 30. Qf6 Qf7 31. Qxf7+ Kxf7 32. Rf1+ Bf3 33. Rxf3+ Ke8

Now Rg7 will give white a strong position.

Aug-29-24  TheaN: Ah no, botched it up. After considering Rxg5 but realizing you miss firepower after the retakes, <26.Nxg5>. Now <26....hxg5> is kind of forced, as else White's just breaking through, Black will also lose h6 and the position is just a mess. But now <27.Rxg5?<>>

I had the feeling the queen would be joining later, but no. This is even after 27....Ke8 28.Rg8+ Kd7 29.Rg7=. In fact I thought Black was forced to play 28....Bf8, after which I thought 29.Qh6? was strong, but 29....Kd7 ∓ turns the tables.

And it's weird, because I considered "we need more firepower" and discarded Rxg5, then play Nxg5 and don't follow up with Qxg5,which adds firepower... <27.Qxg5!> the point being that after <27....Ke8 28.Qg8+ Bf8?> is off-limits due to <29.Qxf8+! Kxf8 (Kd7 30.Qxf7+ +- etc) 30.Rg8#>. This is the critical line I missed, and the exact reason why we needed more firepower in the first place. If Black plays 28....Kd7, the position kind of plays itself after 29.Qxf7+ +-, Black position is busted.

Aug-29-24  mel gibson: <vajeer: <mel gibson> interesting that SF chooses 32...Ne3.>

There is no 32...Ne3.

May I suggest that since the Arena interface and Stockfish are free that you download and set it up? You can check all your ideas out.

Just make sure that you select the number of cores properly: e.g.
if you have 4 CPU cores set 4 -
if 8 cores set 8.
Also get a free temperature monitor program such as Core Temp 1.18 to check out your CPU temperature while running it. It should run at about 55% to 65% CPU - not 100%.

offramp: It's a beautiful position. Both sides have played very well. Black was on the point of winning... But White got in first.
Aug-29-24  vajeer: <mel gibson> that was a typo. If you read my post, l meant 26...Ne3. And thanks for the info regarding engine/CPU

No problem - I hope you can set it up -
I wouldn't be without it now.
I have an 8 core CPU and I set aside 22 Gig of RAM for the Stockfish engine.
