Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-12-08  A.G. Argent: First glance at the final position, it's like "Wait a minute, this guy Armas resigned this game? He looks to be developing a fairly formidable assault on White's King." But it's a deceptive situation. Actually Van Wely's 29.e3 is deadly. With that quiet pawn push, all of a sudden, it's kinda like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for White and for Black, it's Panic Room, all cramped and scary. Black's g4 Rook has nowhere to run, which it really needs to do because the pin can't last much longer and his d7 Bishop's position is oh, so tenuous all because Black's Queen would get very harassed and bothered with Van Wely's 30.Bd3. Not so wise to interpose either Rook, he's too far down in material for a Rook-Bishop exchange. So Armas' position comes apart and ain't much recourse but to toss in a towel or two.

Domdaniel: Black's 5...Nbd7 is a mistake due to White's strong response 6.Nb5. Even though Karpov played ...Nbd7 once (and drew) Black tends to lose a couple of pawns - more, in this case - and Black's initiative is no compensation.
