Sep-13-07  Whitehat1963: Interesting finish: 19. Rf1 Qc5+ 20. Kh1 Rxf1+ 21. Ng1 Nf2+ 22. Qxf2 Qxf2 23. Ba3 or Bf5 (forced) Qxa2. And now it's Q+R+7p v. R+B+5p, hardly fair at all.

  tpstar: Even better is 21 ... Qxg1# or 21 ... Rxg1#. =)

12 ... dxe5! really surprised White, then Black gained an overpowering initiative.

Jan-07-25  mel gibson: I saw that.

Stockfish 17 sacs the White Queen:

17. .. Bxf2+

(17. .. Bxf2+ (1. ... Bxf2+ 2.Qxf2 Nxf2 3.Kxf2 Rhf8 4.Ba3 fxe4 5.Rxe4 Qa5 6.Bxf8 Qxa2+ 7.Rb2 Qxb2+ 8.Re2 Qb1 9.Bc5 b6 10.Bxb6 axb6 11.Rxe5 Qxb3 12.Rxe6 Qxc4 13.Re5 Kb7 ) +6.66/38 85)

score for Black +6.66 depth 38.

If I force SF to take the Bishop with the White Rook as per the game:

18. Rxf2 Rd1+

(18. .. Rd1+ (1. ... Rd1+ 2.Rf1 Qc5+ 3.Nd4 Qxd4+ 4.Be3 Rxf1+ 5.Rxf1 Nxe3 6.exf5 Nxf1+ 7.Kxf1 Rd8 8.Qe1 exf5 9.c5 e4 10.c6 bxc6 11.Qc1 Qd1+ 12.Qxd1 Rxd1+ 13.Ke2 Ra1 14.a4 Ra2+ )+11.93/42 201)

score for Black +11.93 depth 42.

  takebackok: Here we go Tuesday,17. Nf3? Bxf2+ 18. Rxf2 Rd1+ 19. Rf1 Qc5+ etc.
Jan-07-25  Mayankk: Easier than yesterday.

17 ... Bxf2+ 18 Rxf2 (18 Kh1 Bxg3) Rd1+ 19 Rf1 Qc5+ 20 Kh1 (20 Be3 and 20 Nd4 don't inspire much confidence either) Rxf1+ 21 Ng1 Qxg1#. All runs pretty much on autopilot.

It will be interesting if chessgames hides the puzzle strength and let kibitzers poll on it.

PawnSac: in the discussion over puzzle grading.. we need to be fair and understanding. the playing strength of those selecting the puzzle also plays into this. A 1400 player will not see the same complicated nuances as a 2000+, or 2300, so that affects the grading. and engines are no help in assessments of human difficulty level. it's not so easy for CG
Jan-07-25  saturn2: Bxf2 Rd1 Qc5 now interposing Be3 and Nd4 only delays so Kh1 and finally Nf2+ costs the rook.

  Teyss: Agreed, easier than yesterday.

There has been debates about indicating or not puzzle level. IMHO the present system is good: a daily puzzle with level to provide structure and progression since we are all still learning, a bonus puzzle without for a bit more challenge (although CG could renew it more frequently).

That said, even the daily puzzle level is sometimes off (e.g. hard Mondays, relatively easy weekends), so the level can be misleading anyhow, even though it's certainly not intentional.

  chrisowen: Is ok v bar q woof jump cd z Bxf2+ it's affect it's pick it's ha it's ghh buddy xd banal it's au book Bxf2+ over;
Jan-07-25  TheaN: After <17....Bxf2+!> 18.Rxf2, White has three pieces aimed at the back rank. Somewhat humorous detail is that they're all aiming at different squares or blocking each other: the queen is blocked by the rook, the rook f1 and the knight e1 and g1.

This means 18....Rd1+ is destructive, as no single interposition is useful. After 19.Rf1 the king's also protecting f1 but this opens up the crucial g1-a7 diagonal: 19....Qc5+ and White's best is now 20.Nd4 (Qf2 Rxf1+ 21.Kxf1 Qxf2#; Kh1 Rxf1+ 21.Ng1 Rxg1#; Be3 Qxe3+ and the former lines follow) Qxd4 21.Be3 to allow the queen side pieces to join, but after 21....Rxf1+ 22.Rxf1 Nxe3 -+ Black just won a piece outright and is still attacking.

With that in mind, SF plays <18.Qxf2 Nxf2 19.Kxf2 Rhf8 -+> and White is relatively safe for the time being, but down ♕:♗♘.

Jan-07-25  TheaN: <Willber G: <saturn2: Bxf2 Rd1>

Pretty sure <saturn> means consecutive Black moves. Not very clear but deducible.

Jan-07-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king saw the line: 17...Nxf2 18. Nxd4 Nxe4 (19. Nxe6 Qb6+ 20. Qe3 Rd1+ 21. Re1 Qxe3+ 22. Kf1 Qxe1#). 19. Qf3 exd4 20. Bb2 d3 and B has better chances. If the Q moves to 19. Qe3, the exd4 is even worst due the threat of fork with Nc2.

I didn't think about 17... Bxf2+ one mili-second... believe it? I liked that B enough to sac it... LOL

Yeah, I think you're right.

Jan-07-25  Rosbach: Bxf2+ wins: 17...Bxf2+ 18. Rxf2 Rd1+ 19. Rf1 Qc5+
