Dec-29-04  Granite: I assume black won on time.
Sep-28-08  Guguni: A nube could win for black with a simple 37...R:f6. The pawn is not going anywhere. I guess both sides were short of time.

Phony Benoni: This does smell of time pressure, but even so the sequence in the game makes no sense at all. 36...Rf7 allows the trivial 37.exf7, but instead White plays 37.Nxf5 and both players miss the obvious 37...Rxf6. Black again blunders with 37...Nxf5, White takes two pieces to go a rook up, and the game is suddenly 0-1.

I can't believe this is what happened. If instead Black plays the obvious 36...f4:

The rest of the game makes sense. White tries a swindle with 37.Nf5 Nxf5 38.Rf7, hoping for 38...Rxf7?? 39.exf7 and wins. Once Black avoids this the game is quickly over. This was quite possibly on time; players who suddenly "resign" before the opponent moves will often have had their flag fall.
