Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-18-23  Brenin: My solution was 34 ... Bxg3+ 35 Kh3 (35 Rxg3 Rh1 mate) Rh1+ Kg4 36 Rxh4 mate
Oct-18-23  mel gibson: It's an easy mate in 4.
Oct-18-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: Obviously not: 34...Bxg3+?? 35. Rxg3+ Kf8 36. Kh3 Rh1+ 37. Kg4 Qd1+ 38. Rf3. The answer is easy: 34...Rh1+ 35. Nxh1 Qg1+ 36. Kh3 Qxh1+ 37. Kg4 Qxh4#! Monday twice!!
Oct-18-23  Brenin: Oops! My "solution" missed that after 34 ... Bxg3, the response 35 Rxg3 is check. Moral: don't concentrate exclusively on one corner of the board; in particular, check for checks!
Oct-18-23  moodini: Thanks <Brenin>, I feel slightly better about all the times I've overlooked things like that.

Tomorrow you can go back to getting it all correct again.

rodchuck: Not quite Monday; I made the same mistake as <Brenin> and if <Brenin> can make this type of mistake I feel I'm in good company!

Oct-18-23  saturn2: Good puzzle kn as much you have to avoid Bxg3 Rxg3+

scormus: <Brenin> you've made my day! Over-focus on one corner of the board was always a weakness of mine.

And so did <Owen>. When I saw the name I knew to look for a cool first move, like 34 ... Rh1+

Oct-18-23  TheaN: Saw this #4 in an instant, instead missing the flawed 34....Bxg3+ 35. Rxg3+ ∓. Normally that's the opposite. Mind that after the flawed line, Black's likely still winning after 35....Kf8 as 36.Qxd1 is as good as forced (36.Kh3 Rh1+ 37.Kg4 h5+ -+ and the checks don't help) to avoid getting mated, and well, after 36....Rxd1 Black's still up a pawn and his pieces are better.
Oct-18-23  Brenin: Thank you, <TheaN>, for rescuing my botched variation. After 34 ... Bxg3+ 35 Rxg3+ Kf8 36 Qxd1 Rxd1 37 Ra3 Re7 38 Kg3 Nxd5 Black is up by a P, and the passed d-pawn could be crucial. OTB this would involve at least another 20 moves and we would be down to increments, with plenty of opportunities for further oversights.
Oct-18-23  Refused: Cute little mate

34...Rh1+ 35.Nxh1 Qg1+ 36.Kh3 Qxh1+ 37.Kg4 Qxh4#

forced line, no deviations possible. Probably more of a Tuesday problem imo.

fredthebear: That is the actual game score. Not too difficult to repeat the winning line already given.
