LIFE Master AJ: Littlewood - former English Champ - is today's featured player.

This game should be one of his outstanding games.

LIFE Master AJ: Not often you see Larry Evans King crushed like that.

Lloyds Bank used to be one of the years' BIG events - faded into obscurity now.

Does anyone else on this site actually remember this tournament? (You HAD to have been active in chess in the 1970's ... for this to be true.)

Never played in it ... wanted to - read about it very year.

Jan-18-12  King Death: All of the games from Lloyds Bank belong to: Larry D Evans not the grandmaster.

I'm a few years older than you and remember this tournament too even though it wasn't heavily covered here in the USA. It's too bad Lloyds had to end their sponsorship of this in the 1990s when they ran into some problems. The last one was held in 1994 I think.

LIFE Master AJ: Hmm. It clearly shows that Black was Larry M. Evans. (The GM.)

I searched the CB (on-line) database ... and got no matches. But this means nothing, as there are many games that they do not have.

If you are sure of your source, the correct thing to do is to submit a correction slip ... I have submitted hundreds of these ...

Jan-18-12  King Death: There's one major source that doesn't have those games but I've found them in two other places online under Larry the IM plus I have a copy of the crosstable of the 1978 Lloyds Bank.
Mar-29-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king didn't see much, so: 30. Nxf7 Nxf7 31. Be5+ Nxe5 32. Qxe5+ (Kf7? 33. Qxh8 and Qh7+ next) Kh7 33. Rxf5 (gxf5 34. Bxf5#) Rc7 34. Rf6 Nxf6 35. gxf6 Qf8 36. Qxh5+ Kg8 37. Qxg6+ Rg7 38. fxg7 and win; Many lines to analyse... not today.

I could try sacrifice in the other P... lgs. Today, I'm a little tired... sorry.

Mar-29-25  mel gibson: I got the first ply.

Stockfish 17 says:

30. Nxg6

(30. Nxg6 (1.Nxg6 fxg6 2.Qe5+ Kf8 3.Qxd5 Nf7 4.Qxb7 Ne7 5.Rxe7 Qxe7 6.Qxc8+ Kg7 7.Qc6 Qe3+ 8.Bf2 Qh3 9.Qg2 Qg4 10.Qxg4 hxg4 11.Bg3 Rc8 12.Bb1 Rc6 13.Ba2 Rb6 14.Rf2 Re6 ) +7.97/43 302)

score for White +7.97 depth 43.

Mar-29-25  Walter Glattke: White wins even with 30.Nd7!? Ne4 (>Ng3) 31.Be5+ (Qe5+ or Be5+ the key move, so not 30.Nxf7 Nxf7) f6 32.Nxf6 Ng3 33.Ne5+ Kh7 34.Nxg3. So what? 30.-Qxd7 31. Qe5+ Kh7 32.Qxd5 Rc6 33.Be5 - 30. Nxg6 the most powerful möve, but black is ripe to be destroyed.
Mar-29-25  Walter Glattke: Ah, 33.-Ne7 34.Qf3. Better 33.a5 Ne7 34.Qe5 Re8 35.Ba4 Nec8 36.Naxc6 ++- several ways
Mar-29-25  Allderdice83: I remember taking Larry D. Evans' chess camp in 1982. I learned a lot and increased my rating by about 200 points in one year, breaking 1700. He used to emphasize, "keeping your finger on the pulse of the position."

As for the puzzle, I looked at 30. Nxf7 extensively and decided that White wins no matter how Black takes the knight. Of course, if he doesn't, it's a fork.

Eg. 30. Nxf7 Nxf7 31. Be5+ Kh7 32. Qxh5+ Ngh6 (32 ... gxh5 33. Bxf5#) 33. Bxf5 gxf5 34. g6+ Kg8 35. gxf7+ Nxf7 36. Bxh8 Nxh8 37. Rxf5

(better is 33 ... Qb6, but White is still winning on 34. Rf2 gxf5 35. Bxh8 Kxh8 36. gxh6 Rg8+ 37. Kh2 Qxh6 38. Rxf5 Bc6 39. Qxh6+ Nxh6 40. Rh5 Rg6 41. Rg1 Kg7 42. Rxg6+ Kxg6 43. Rg5+ Kf7 44. Rxa5)

Alternatively, 32. Rxf5 Ne7 (32 ... gxf5?? 33. Bxf5#) 33. Rxf7+ Bxf7 34. Bxh8 Kxh8 35. Qxe7 Qxe7 36. Rxe7 Be8 37. Rxb7, and White's up two pawns in the endgame.

All that was done without Stockfish, so I could be totally wrong.

Mar-29-25  Walter Glattke: 33.a5 not possible, 33.Be4 fxe4 34.Bxd6 mate soon after Rxd6 or Qg4+ Kh1 Qxh4+ Bh2 - 33.-Ne7 34. Qe5 Re8 35.Bxc6
