May-16-04  refutor: any opinions on the unusual 7.Qa4+? even though Black eventually won, I think White was better after 11.Qa3

tpstar: I'm leery of these Qb3/Qa4 lines with the Bc8 still at home to defend; they seem to work better after ... Bf5 or ... Bg4. After 5 ... e6 White got what he wanted from the opening and should have proceeded with 6. Nf3, 7. Bd3 & 8.0-0. I was going to suggest 9. Nxd7 but that was tried before D Melnikov vs E Shaposhnikov, 2001 so Black won both games in the OE after 7. Qa4+. 11. Qa3 prevented 0-0 but not 0-0-0 where the Rd8 was instantly useful. Meanwhile, White required the awful retreat 13. Bf1 (13. 0-0?! Bxg2 14. Bb5+ Bc6 wins a Pawn), then had problems after the strong 20 ... Qe5; the KR gets shut out after 21. Qb2 Qc5+, 21. Bd2 Qd4+, or 21. Bb2 Qe3+. But the speculative 21. Rd1?! was convincingly refuted. Nice game by Black.
May-17-04  refutor: the main line of the panov attack is exactly what white wants out of the opening? 6.Nf3 Bb4 7.Bd3 O-O 8.O-O dxc4 9.Bxc4 b6 you're in a good variation of the nimzo (active for Black).

tpstar: <refutor> What I meant was White wants Black to play ... e6 locking in the Bc8, then White has a free hand to develop. I stand by my opinion of White's chances in your sample line; here's the data from the Opening Explorer as to how White does from here.
May-18-04  refutor: yes but chess doesn't equal statistics...look at the board...black has easy play from there. if you like statistics, black should've played 9. ... Nbd7 Opening Explorer
