Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-05-05  PivotalAnorak: ??
6. ♕a4+
7. ♕a4+
Aug-05-05  TheSlid: Would this be an example of what the French call "folie a deux"? After 5...b6, the knight cannot come to c6 if white plays 6.Qa4+ as <PivotalAnorak> says.
Jan-27-10  dbquintillion: See I had this position last night, and I too thought that 6. Qa4+ should be winning right away, but actually I think Nc6 might be ok. After 6. Qa4+ there followed Nc6 7. Ne5 (if Qxc6+ then Bd7 draws by repetition after Qb7 and Bc8) Bb7 8. Nxc6 Bxc3+ 9. bxc3 Qd7 and there was no way to hold on the knight and suddenly black is ok and has better development. Which was highly irritating because I thought my opponent had blundered with 5. ...b6.

Maybe there is a better 7th move for white? I could be missing something, but this line led to what I felt like was a slightly worse position for me and I was lucky to get the win by other means. Thoughts anyone?

In the game here though, 7. Qa4+ does certainly seem to win immediately.

Jan-27-10  erad1288: <dbquintillion> you did miss something after 6. Qa4+ Nc6 7. Qxc6+ Bd7 8. Qb7 and if 8...Bc8 then white has 9.Qxa8 winning, On the other hand, black may try 8...Rb8 hoping for a draw by repetition if 9.Qxa7?? Ra8= but simply 9. Qa6 and though the white queen is offside, black has not much he can do against cxd5 and Qd3 when white consolidates. The only try would be 9...b5 hoping to trap the queen on the a-file while black seeks counterplay in the center, but I wouldn't think that black would be able to pull it off.
Jan-27-10  dbquintillion: I knew there had to be something! Thanks.
