  plang: 11 h3 was a pet move of Tregubovs and Sutovsky had prepared 12..Nc4 in response. Black misjudged the position (20..Ba6 would have been an improvement) and after 22 Be3! White had f4 for his knight and Black's e6 square was weak. 24..Bxe3 25 Nxf6+..Kf7 26 fxe..Kxf6 27 e4 would have been crushing for White. Tregubov pointed out that 28 Qb2! would have been decisive: ie. 28..Nxd5 29 Nxd5..Rxd5 30 Qxf6!..Rxd1 31 Qf8+..Kd7 32 Qf7+..Kd6 33 Bf4+..Kc6 34 Bg2+..Kd5 35 Qc4+..Ka5 36 Qa4#. White offered a draw after playing 30 Bxf5 but, at this point, Black felt that he had gained some advantage. Tregubov erred with 33 Rxd7?; he could have drawn with 33 Nc7..Rxd1 34 Nxe6..Kxe6 35 Qf3..Rd7 36 g4..Nd4 37 gxf+..Nxf5 38 Qe2+..Kf7 39 Qh5+..Ke6 40 Qe2+ etc.. Both players were in time pressure; 38 Bg5? was an error that could have been punished by 38..Nf3+ 39 Kg3..Nd4 winning immediately. After 41 Qf5? (White did not realize he had reached the time control) White was lost; 41 Bg5..Qf3 42 Qxf3..Nxf3 43 Bf4..Nd4 44 Bb8..Nc6 45 Bc7..Ke6 Black's advantage would have been small.

A hard fought game by two uncompromising players.
