plang: Three months after this game at Wijk aan Zee 2002 Bareev played 13 Rd1 against the same opponent and won that game as well. In a 1999 blitz game 13..b4 had been tried; 13..Ng4 was new but does not look like an improvement as Black's compensation for the pawn was not convincing. Bareev thought that Black's only defense was 23..Bxc3 24 Qxc3..Rxd1+ 25 Bxd1..Qxc3 26 Rxc3..Kf8 27 Bb3..Ra6 28 Bxc4..Rxc6 29 Kf1..bxc with only a small White edge. 24..e6 25 Nxb6..Rxd2 26 Rxd2..Re8 27 Nxc4..bxc 28 Rxc4 would have won easily for White.
