Feb-01-04  popski: Oops, white resigned, but have winning position after 15.Qf5!
Jan-24-05  thesonicvision: you're right
Sep-06-06  Kwesi: Maybe this is one for <suenteus po 147>'s <Never Resign!> game collection...

FSR: Weird -- what was White thinking? And this is a CORRESPONDENCE game, mind you.
Aug-19-09  The Lone Banana: Moral of the story:

In a complex position, with your opponent's king at least semi-exposed, NEVER assume that there is no "Zwischenzug mit Mittelschmerz".

Does that mean "in-between move with middle pain" or "making a move in the middle of the menstrual cycle"? How about "retake the knight even though your ovulation is painful" or "don't give up, even if your girdle is killing you"?

Nein. Nicht girdle, nicht corpus luteum. Think of halo high over the base habit of thoughtless immediate recapture. Think NUN OF THE ABOVE.

If your opponent's king is in the open and there are a lot of developed pieces, the chances are high that you have a good move to make *in between* her taking your piece and you recapturing. In fact, your *in between* move may be as disabling as the pain of ovulation most foul.

When is it right to forget about in-between moves? Hard to say. This is certainly a prime example of when it is wrong. White had an IN-BETWEEN MOVE as disabling as a KICK IN THE OVARY.

Zwischenzug mit Mittelschmerz.

Aug-19-09  The Lone Banana: Is your opponent not female?

No worries, mate. With a little thought, you can probably come up with a non-ovarian metaphor. Before reflexively recapturing, try reciting the ancient wisdom of the oracle of Zwischenzug:

Rah, rah, ree!

[Before making the obvious reply to any move one's opponents might make to dictate the direction or tempo of the game] kick'em in the knee!

Rah, rah, resticles!

[Before recapturing] kick'em in the OTHER knee!

Mar-30-13  BishopofBlunder: Perhaps white's move got lost in the mail.
Mar-30-13  Cushion: Are we sure this isn't a case of the wrong result? It would be a little bit weird for black to resign after he made a move, but possible.

Phony Benoni: A wrong result is possible. But even in a correspondence game, White could have missed 15.Qf5+. I don't get the impression these are strong players.

I wonder if the game may have been from one of the <Chess Review> postal tournaments. If so, it may have appeared in the magazine around that time.
