Feb-14-06 | | notsodeepthought: Even though it was an odds game, 32 ... Bc5+ was a nice "shot" by Cheney. |

Feb-26-06 | | dbquintillion: very funny <notso>. unfortunately, nobody will remember why a few months from now. |

Apr-09-09 | | vonKrolock: <32.f3> The move actually played 32...♗d4+ wins, but for me it seems that after 32...e3 with idea of d5-d4 etc, black may be winning the battle with an even more direct infantry assault |

Apr-10-09 | | Calli: David Lawson wrote about Morphy's encounter with Cheney: "Apparently, George N. Cheney of Syracuse (who was to be a causality of Bull Run just two years later) came to New York at this time, for he played two games with Morphy at Knight odds within a day or two of Morphy’s birthday, one of which he won. Morphy did not reveal the scores of these games unless pressed for them, and so we only know the game he lost to Cheney and not the one he won." - Paul Morphy, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess, page 223. The game, therefore, was played about June 22, 1859 (PM's birthday). Since Cheney traveled all the way to New York, he must have played other people in the clubs. I wonder if any games were published. |

 | | Penguincw: Not bad. +1 score against Morphy. Imagine if that knight on b1 was still there. click for larger viewIt would totally change the game. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Penguin> Actually, two games were played in this odds mini-match: Morphy won the other, which is not currently in the CG database. This one is better known -- partly because it's a Morphy loss, but also because Morphy was too much the gentleman to publish the score of his win, or even to display it to people who requested to see it. Good old-fashioned chivalry, I suppose. A gentleman never brags, or puts himself in a position that might hurt somebody's feelings. |
