plang: Played in the second round; Benko had prepared the move order with 9..Bb7 and 10..Nb8 in order to avoid certain variations of the Breyer. Keres showed in a later round that this move order is inaccurate by playing 11 dxe! against Benko and after the exchange of queens White was clearly better. 15 h4?! was an inaccuracy allowing 15..d5! after which Black gained an endgame advantage with a superior pawn structure. 25 Kf1 would have had the advantage of discouraging ..f5.

Benko afrer 28..Ke6:

"Black's advantage lies in his ability to create an outside passed pawn on the kingside. This means that any King and pawn endgame will be a clear win while a Bishop endgame will also offer Black good chances of success. White's best chance to draw is to exchange Bishops and enter a pure Rook endgame. Unfortunately, he isn't able to achieve this."

With 43 a4 Olafsson was attempting to exchange the queenside pawns with the hope of reaching a R+B vs R ending. After 43..b4 he was unable to seriously threaten this.
