Apr-16-04  ToTheDeath: Very pretty. If 12... Qxb7 13. Rd8 mate. Or 12... Bxd7 13. Qxe4+ mates.

fredthebear: If 12...c6 the Rook windmills along with 13.Re7+ Kd8 (If 13...BxRe7 14.QxBe7# Black's dark-squared bishop dare not interpose or capture the rook.) 14.Rxf7+ Ke8 15.Re7+ Kd8 16.RxBe6+ mates next.
Feb-08-18  sneaky pete: In printed game collections I found this game as Wallis vs NN, Sidney (Australia), 1920, when Philip Norman was only 14 years old (and most likekly living in Great Britain). The move 12 ... c6 "and white announced mate in 5 moves" is added.

White is probably
Francis J Wallis

MissScarlett: Game appears in the April 1923 <BCM>, p.145, as <Played at Sydney some years ago.> Black is <NN>, but White is <E J Wallis>. Still, it's likely Francis J Wallis.

<The move 12 ... c6 "and white announced mate in 5 moves" is added.> Ditto.

MissScarlett: Now I find the game in the May 1914 <BCM>, p.190, sent by <Francis J Wallis> from Sydney and said to have been recently played. It is referred to as the Polish Gambit.
