Phony Benoni: As is the game; I don't see where White is in any particular danger (8...Qa5+ 9.Nc3).
Jul-13-07  skiskichess5: It's possible that white resigned suddenly thinking that he would loose the Nc3 knight after dxc4 ... and missing Qxd4
Jul-13-07  skiskichess5: See Gerhard Vetter page ... 100% record with 4 miniatures ... some resignations difficult to fathom I'd say. Gerhard Vetter

Phony Benoni: <skiskichess5> Thanks for pointing out Vetter's page. Of the four games, I'd say that two of the resignations were definitely justified, and in a third game White probably threw up looking at his position and had to take a sick day.

And G Vetter vs G Sheffield, 1993 suggests a possible explanation for the game on this page. That game was played in the same "event" as this one, with reversed colors. This could indicate a double-round correspondence event, where Sheffield may have simply abandoned the second game after resigning the first. Happens all the time.
