Sutovsky vs A Kovacevic, 2004

  plang: In this topical variation of the Najdorf here Black delays development of the queen knight and the b-pawn and instead initiates a relatively early d5 break. 24..Rxb3 25 Qxe7!..Nc6 26 Qe6..Ra8 27 Nxe5!..Nxe5 28 Qxb3 would have been favorable for White. On the other hand 25 Nxa3..Bxa3 26 Qc4..Nd4 27 Qxc3..Rxc3 would have been winning for Black. 27 Qe6..Rf8 left Black with a clear edge; better would have been 27 Qxf3..exf 28 Nc4..Ra6 29 Ne5!..g6 with only a small edge for Black. 29..Rxa2! was a really pretty tactical shot: ie. 30 Kxa2..Nb4+ (30..Ra8+ and 30..Qe2 also would have won) 31 Kb1..Qa3 32 Rc2..Nxc2 33 Qa2..Ra8! 34 Qxa3..Nxa3+ 35 Kc1..Rc8+ winning the knight. An even quicker win would have been 30..Ra1+ 31 Kxa1..Ra8+ 32 Kb1..Qa3 33 Kc1..Bg5+ 34 Kd1..Qe3! and wins.

A great Sicilian clash - voted the 4th best game In Informant 85. Sutovsky was at his peak around this time playing some really exciting tactical chess.

This would make a good game of the day.
