Oct-31-02  bishop: Was 14...a3 necessary? Was 18...Nb1 the best move?

Honza Cervenka: 14.a3 is not necessary. It prevents 14...b4 with next 15...Qa5 but it also weakens queenside of white. Another and probably better possibility is 14.Ne2. 18.Nb1 is certainly bad as black showed in the game. But what can white play? 18.axb4 Nxb4 19.h5 Qa5 20.Kb1 d5 is advantageous for black whose attack is much quicker than attack of white on the kingside, for example 21.g6 Bf6 22.gxh7+ Kh8 23.Bd4 (what else?) e5 24.h6 g6 25.Bf2 d4 and black wins or 21.h6 dxe4 22.g6 fxg6 23.Qd7 Rxc3 24.Qxe6+ Rf7 25.bxc3 Bd5 and black wins.
