plang: Played in the last (9th) round; Sokolov need a win to overtake Tregubov and catch Nicolic in order to share first place. The "waiting" move 7 Rc1 is intended to discourage 7..dxc (losing a tempo by developing White's bishop). Black ignored that rule perhaps with the idea (with 8..a6) of provoking the committal a4. In the 2000 Lost Boys tournament Sokolov had played 11 Qxd4 against Tregubov but, on that occasion, he was not in a "must win" situation. 16..Qxd4? 16 Bxe6! would not have been advisable. 17..Bg5 was new; 17..Qb6 had been played previously. Sokolov thought that 23..Nf6? was the only real error that Black made; he recommended 23..f5 24 Nc5..Bxh5 25 Ng6..Qf6! 26 Rxe6..Qxd4+ 27 Kh1..Qxb2 28 Rce1..Kh7 and it was not clear that White would have enough compensation for the pawns. Black was able to fend off the attack but ended up in a hopeless endgame.
