Sep-10-03  unclewalter: Somebody help me out, What was 26. Rd1 all about?
Sep-10-03  TheMightyPawn: Perhaps 26.Qg5 was better forcing off the queens or maybe even 26.Rh3 followed with Rh4 allowing the rook to come on c4 .
Aug-10-23  Brenin: 26 ... Rxc3, and if 27 bxc3 then 27 ... Rb8 28 Kc2 Bc6 leaves White's K fatally exposed. This is better than 27 ... Bd5 28 Qg4 Qxe5 29 Qd4, blunting Black's attack. Black's best response seems to be 27 Rg4 Qf5 28 Qxf5 exf5 29 Rxg7+ Kxg7 30 bxc3, with the central Ps giving some compensation for the lost piece.

PawnSac: UncleWalter I know this is about 20 years late but it appears white intended d4 to support the e pawn.
Aug-10-23  jrredfield: I saw 26 ... Rxc3 as my first gut feeling. My subsequent analysis pretty much coincides with what <Brenin> said. I agree that 27 bxc3 will quickly hasten White's defeat. At least 27 Rg4 Qf5 28 Qxf5 exf5 29 Rf4 Rc7 30 Rxf5 keeps White somewhat in the fight for a while.
Aug-10-23  Mayankk: I wanted to play 26 ... Rxc3 27 bxc3 Rb8 28 Kc2 Bd5, thinking that 29 c4 Qd4, threatening 30 ... Qb2# should be winning.

However text has 28 ... Bc6, and so maybe 28 ... Bd5 doesn't work.

Aug-10-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: I don't know if this is enough: 26...Rxc3 27. bxc3 Qa4 28. Rd2 Bd5 29. Rc2 Rb8+ 30. Kc1 Qa1+ 31. Kd2 Bb3 32. Qg5 g6...

The continuation 27... Rb8 could be interesting if it didn't reply 28. Qg5 which forces the exchange of ♕. This shows that proposed line has some merit.

I wondered the line: 28. Qg5 Bf3+ 29. Kc2 Bxd1+ 30. Kxd1 Qf1+ 31. Kd2 Rb2+ 32. Ke3 Qf2+ 33. Ke4 Re2+ 34. Re3. Maybe, Brenin or other will show something I'm missing, but I feel 28. Kc2 as a mistake in a bad situation.

The game would continue like: 30. Kc1 Qb2+ 31. Kd1 Qxa1+ 32. Ke2 Qb2+ 33. Ke3 Qc1+ 34. Kd4 Rd8+ 35. Kc5 Qa3+ 36. Kxc6 Qa4+ 37. Kc7 Rd7+ 38. Kb8 Qb5+ and White ♔ is dead. Other possibility is 32... Rb2+ 33. Ke3 Qg1+ 34. Kf4 Qf2+ 35. Kg4 Bxg2. However, I didn't find the check mate, but I suppose this wll come soon...

Aug-10-23  mel gibson: I also saw 26. .. Rxc3 but I couldn't see how it would win. There was nothing else which could make progress.

Stockfish 16 follows the game ply but White has a different reply - White declines to take the Rook:

26. .. Rxc3

(26. .. Rxc3 (Rc8xc3 Rg3-g4 Qf4-f5 Qh5xf5 e6xf5 b2xc3 f5xg4 Rd1-d2 f7-f5 e5xf6/ep g7xf6 Rd2-b2 Bb7-c8 Rb2-b4 Bc8-f5 Kb1-c1 a6-a5 Rb4-f4 ) +4.93/43 202)

score for Black +4.93 depth 43.

If I force SF to make the same reply as the game - accepting the Rook - 27. bxc3 the score is stronger for Black.

26. .. Rxc3
27. bxc3 Rb8

(27. .. Rb8 (Rf8-b8 Kb1-c2 Bb7-c6 d3-d4 Qf4-e4+ Rg3-d3 Qe4xg2+ Rd1-d2 Bc6-a4+ Kc2-c1 Qg2-b7 Rd2-e2 Qb7-b1+ Kc1-d2 Ba4-b5 Qh5-f3 Bb5-c4 Qf3-e4 Bc4-d5 Qe4-h4 Rb8-b2+ Kd2-e3 Qb1-g1+ Ke3-f4 h7-h6 ) +9.60/43 407)

score for Black +9.60 depth 43.

Aug-10-23  stacase: I didn't see 28...Bc6 maybe over the board ...
Aug-10-23  DepthVitalazy: Its a surprisingly easy puzzle??????

Aug-10-23  agb2002: Black has a bishop for a knight.

White has Rxg7+ with perpetual check if the queen moves away from the king side.

The semiopen b- and c-files suggest 26... Rxc3 27.bxc3 Rb8:

A) 28.Kc2 Bc6 (threatens Ba4#)

A.1) 29.Ra1 Qf2+

A.1.a) 30.Kd1 Ba4+ 31.Rxa4 (31.Kc1 Qb(c)2#) 31... Rb1#.

A.1.b) 30.Kc1 Qb2+ 31.Kd1 Qxa1+ is winning.

A.2) 29.c4 Ba4+ 30.Kc3 Rb3+ 31.Kc2 Rb5+ 32.Kc3 Rxe5 33.Qg4 (or 33.Qf3 Qxf3) 33... Qxg4 34.Rxg4 Bxd1 wins decisive material.

A.3) 29.d4 Be4+

A.3.a) 30.Rdd3 Qf2+ 31.Kc1 (31.Kd1 Rb1#) 31... Qa2 and mate soon.

A.3.b) 30.Rgd3 Qf2+ 31.R1d2 Qf1 32.Qd1 (32.Rd1 Bxd3+ 33.Rxd3 Qb1+ 34.Kd2 Rb2+ 35.Ke3 Qe1+ 36.Kf4 [36.Kf3 Qe2+] 36... Rxg2 looks winning) 32... Bxd3+ 33.Rxd3 Qxg2+ wins a pawn at least.

B) 28.Qg5 Bc6+ 29.Kc2 (29.Ka1(2) Qa4#) 29... Ba4#.

C) 28.Ka2 Qa4+ 29.Kb1(2) Bf3+ 30.Kc1 Qxd1#.

Aug-10-23  Refused: 26...Rxc3 is the first move that comes to mind. Classical sic. sac.

27.bxc3 Rb8 (setting up all kinds of threats with the discovered check). 28.Kc2 Bc6! (much better than the other candidates like Qa4+ which just lead nowhere).

Now black has to find a way to deal with 29...Ba4# threats. My attempt would've been

a) 29.c4 Ba4+ 30.Kc3 alas that also falls short. 30...Rb3+ 31.Kc2 Qf2+ 32.Rd2 Ra3+!! and mate is imminent b) 29.Ra1 Qf2+ is just as dead
c) 29.d4 Qe4+ 30.Rgd3 Qxg2+ 31.R1d2 Ba4+ might be the most stubborn defense, but this looks outright dead.
