May-01-07  Tactic101: Was a big error to castle queenside. This mating pattern almost always happens there.
Jul-09-07  sanyas: This is somewhat debasing the idea of an Immortal game, though the idea is somewhat silly anyway. Just sacrificing a bunch of pieces doesn't make a game truly great, and here it is basically just a trap. A very elegant trap, to be sure, but really just a simple tactical idea which involves a lot of sacrifice. Boden's mate is waiting for Black if he castles queenside, and he does! All that remains is to deflect the queen, hence the sacrifices... surely not an immortal. But quite pretty anyway.
Jul-17-07  WarmasterKron: <Tactic101> 10...O-O-O was certainly a blunder, but I think we can forgive poor NN for not realising that Canal was going to sacrifice both rooks and the queen.
Feb-23-08  D.Observer: Peruvian Immortal
Feb-23-08  Jim Bartle: Spectacular.

Still, a bit sad that Peru's immortal game is vs. NN. Granda has some great wins, such as vs. Seirawan in Buenos Aires 1993, that would be more deserving. Oscar Quinones also has games which might qualify.

Phony Benoni: To understand the pun, you have to play through the game backwards.
Apr-20-08  get Reti: It should be "A Man, a Plan, a Canal:Panama" so people who haven't seen that before could understand the pun.
Apr-20-08  D.Observer: An annotation is available at Wikipedia. The only things I saw there is:

<<<10. ... O-O-O>>>

<Reinfeld writes, <Black mistakenly thinks that <11.axb4> is out of the question. But White, seeing further ahead and relying on his excellent attacking position, has a stunning surprise continuation.>

Iakov Neishtadt writes, <Black is convinced that his opponent cannot take the Bishop. <This would indeed have been the case if he had played not 10...0-0-0, but 10...Ngf6.>>

Seirawan and Minev summarize, <Motto: Think twice before castling on the Queenside!>>

<<<14. Ba6#>>>

<Reinfeld writes <Microscopically preferable was 12...♘e5 13.♗xe5 ♕xh1 14.♕xf7 ♖d7 <amusing would be 14...♘e7 15.♕xe6+! ♖d7 16.♗g4 ♖hd8 17.♕d6! forcing mate> 15.♕e8+ ♖d8 16.♕xe6+ ♖d7 17.♕d8+ ♖d8 18.♗g4#>>

Apr-20-08  percyblakeney: 4. d4 was a fitting move considering the pun.
Apr-20-08  Karnatakiaditya: Spectacular!
Apr-20-08  drpoundsign: OMG!!...what a Dumb Computer. Two Bishop mate...sswwweeeeett!!

OBIT: I don't know... nice mate, but it's a huge stretch to call this an immortal game. All you have to see is that 11. axb4 wins a piece, since if 11...Qxa1+ 12. Kd2, Black has no move that boths saves his queen and stops the mate in two.

  OBIT: After 12...Ne5 13. Bxe5 Qxa1, White can force mate by 14. Qxf7 Ne7 (or 14...Rd7 15. Qe8+ Rd8 16. Qxe6+ Rd7 17. Qe8+ Rd8 18. Bg4mate) 15. Qxe6+ Rd7 16. Bg4 Rd8 17. Qd6

playground player: Poor NN! Bet he could've sworn he was going to win this one.
Apr-20-08  GreenArrow: As is so often the case with Scandinavian defence players, tactical ineptitude leads to a quick rout.
Apr-20-08  PinnedPiece: <get Reti: It should be "A Man, a Plan, a Canal:Panama" so people who haven't seen that before could understand the pun.>

This is a palindrome...

The very first one ever uttered was "Madam, I'm Adam."

FSR: <The very first one ever uttered was "Madam, I'm Adam.">

To which the reply reportedly was "Name no one man." (weird) or simply, "Eve."

Returning to the game: The Peruvian Immortal, yay! I wrote the Wikipedia article on this game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peruvi...

OBIT: So, since the title is a palindrome, the joke must be that "NN" is also a palidrome. To finish with another palindrome: aha! :)
Apr-20-08  acirce: Dan Scoones vs K Spraggett, 1986 <--- a Dan, a clan, a canal - Canada!
Apr-20-08  Chessmensch: Here is THE reference on palindromes:

Apr-20-08  waustad: Diemer did several with this mating pattern. I think it is one of the main reasons he kept playing Qf3.

FSR: We really need some comments from Otto, Bob, Anna, Hannah, Ava, Ana, Eve, and Aviva. That guy Lon Nol, whom some of you may remember from the Viet Nam war, would be good too, but I'm pretty sure he's dead.
Apr-21-08  percyblakeney: <FSR> There's always this Romanian athlete:
