Jan-27-04  S4NKT: once again Ne2 didn't do very much.
Mar-15-04  mtalfan104: Is the English opening named after Staunton, an Englishman who was its first great practictioner? I would like to know!

An Englishman: Good Evening: S4NKT, Staunton's move order in the opening was a mess. First 5.Nc3, then 6.Nge2, and then an eventual d4. Also, his 6.Nd2 was weak, neither challenging the Bishop nor doing anything about the center. Bd2 was preferable. Williams' ...Bb4 was a nice annoying move, but 15...e4 needlessly gave up the d4 square and should have caused his defeat. But I give him credit for a good comeback win. Incidentally, according to legend, Williams is one of the reasons we have chess clocks; during the London 1851 tournament, he spent so much time on one move that his opponent wrote two chapters of a history book!

ChessCoachClark: This game concludes with a less common version of the Vukovic Mate, where the King directly supports his Rook for the mate. What a hands-on manager with a fancy hat!
Jul-23-18  iking: wonderful ...
