Jan-12-04  gig: Hi there, just wana find out why Leko moved his knight to 9...Na5. Is there any innovation from this opening?any opinion?thanks!
Jan-12-04  AdrianP: <gig> I think you mean why Anand moved his N 9...Na5!?

This is an Anand novelty, I think, but one which he has played before against both Grischuk and Topalov at the Corsica Open last year (rapidplay): see Games Like Leko vs Anand, 2004

The main idea, I think, is to uncover the threat of taking twice on c3 which would wreck W's queen-side pawns. 10. Nb3 is his 'improvement' but I'd imagine that Anand had most of this all worked out before. Topalov had played 10. Ne5 allowing Anand to take twice on c3. Grischuk played 10. Bf4 and then 11. Nb3, and eventually Anand took twice on c3. Both games were draws.

Jan-13-04  gig: Thank you adrianP for that wonderful analysis,I just thought of moving b's knight to a4 would surrender w's bishop later on when black pushes his knight to c4 w/c will allow him to launch an attack to c2 & b2 by playing b5,b6,Bb7,Rc8 etc. As you knw,Im fond of using the Taimanov/Kan. thanks a lot
