plang: 12..Re8 had been played by Adams against Sakaev at the 2002 European Club Cup at Kalithea and Black had gone on to win; 12..a5 was new. 17..c5 offered a pawn sacrifice that White should have turned down with 18 Qd2; instead after accepting it his minor pieces were less active than Blacks and he had to defend against Black's kingside initiative. A lesser evil would have been 20 cxd..exd 21 Bxd7..Nxd7 22 Bxa5 though after 22..Ne5 Black would still have had an edge. Wells was critical of 31 Nf4?! as after 31..Re5 the white queen was chased away from the kingside; he recommended instead 31 Qxc5!?..Ne4 32 Qf5..Ngf2 33 c5 with queenside counterplay. Black missed the winning continuation 37..hxg 38 hxg..Re5! 39 Bxe5..Qxe5 40 Rg1..Qxg3+ 41 Kf1..Nd2+ 42 Qxd2..Qxg1+ 43 Kxg1..exd with decisive material gains, 38 Rg1?1 lost quickly; a tougher defense would have been 38 b6..hxg 39 hxg..Re5! 40 Bxe5..Qxe5 41 Rg1 and Black then has to find 41..Kf8! (the endgame mentioned in the previous sentence is no longer winning for Black as the White queenside pawns are further advanced) 42 Nf4..Qg5 43 b7..Rb8 44 Kh2..Ke7 and there is no defense to the rook check on the h-file.
