Feb-19-04  AdrianP: <Catfriend> Yes, I remember, but I think the upshot of your line was a position which was favourable to Black (if anyone)... was Ng4 second-best?
Feb-19-04  ajit: is Rajdabov vs Leko over??
Feb-19-04  AdrianP: <Eigis/Catfriend Line> 32 Ne7+ Kh7 33 Qe4 f5!?
Feb-19-04  ughaibu: How about 34....Nf5 planning Ng3? For example 35.c4 Ng3 36.g3 Qg3 37.Kh1 e3 etc.
Feb-19-04  Catfriend: Yes, I think so. 31..♘g4 32.♔h1} is better for white. ♘ow for 31..♕e3:

31..♕e3+ 32.♕:♕e3 ♗:♕e3+ 33.♔h1 ♗d3 34.♖:h3 e3 35.♘d4 ♔g7 36.♖h4 ♖d8 37.♖hf4 ♖d6 and I'd say it's equal.

34.d6 e3 35.♖hf4 ♗c3 36.♘d4 ♖d8 37.♖:♘f6 ♖:♗b3! 38.c:♖b3 ♗:♘d4 39.♖6f3 (♖:f7?? e2!) ♖:d6 40.♖e1 ♖d5 is quite good for black. I'd play here for a win as Kaparov, but don't forget Gazza had less time1

Feb-19-04  Catfriend: <AdrianP> 33..f5 34.♕e6! ♕e3+ 35.♕:♕e3 ♘:♕e3 36.♖e1 with a good advantage.

34..♔g7 35.♖:h3 ♕e3+ 36.♔h1

Feb-19-04  Catfriend: <ughaibu> in what line? I'm confused a bit now:)
Feb-19-04  ughaibu: In the game, instead of taking the draw.
Feb-19-04  Catfriend: <ughaibu> interesting:) 34..♘f5 35.c4! ♘:g3 36.h:♘g3 ♕:g3+ 37.♔h1 e3 38.♖e2 ♖e8 39.♕f6 ♖e4! 40.♘e7+ ♖:♘e7 41.c5! ♕g4! 42.♕f1 ♖e5 and other similar lines lead to black's victory!

However, simple 35.♕e5 draws immediately

Feb-19-04  crafty: 33. d6 ♘f5 34. ♘e7+ ♕xe7 35. dxe7 ♘xd4 36. ♗xf7+ ♔g7 =   (eval -0.33; depth 13 ply; 750M nodes)
Feb-19-04  Catfriend: That was a line I didn't analyse! Thx, <crafty>!
Feb-19-04  Catfriend: Yes, surely, that's what I'd do there.
Feb-19-04  Catfriend: 34.♔h1?? ♕e2 with mate
Feb-19-04  InspiredByMorphy: sorry Catfriend I was speaking too quickly.
Feb-19-04  InspiredByMorphy: Great play from both sides!

  tamar: Fritz 7 points out spectacular fireworks in the eigis/Catfriend line 32. ♘e7+ ♔h7 33.♕xe4 where instead of 33...f5 black can play 33...♕xh4!! Then 34 gh ♗e3+ 35 ♕xe3 (otherwise 35 ♔h1 ♘f2+ wins the ♕ outright)♘e3 36 ♖f3 ♘xc2 37 ♖xh3 ♔g7 gives good winning chances for black. After 33...♕xh4!! even more spectacular is 34 ♖xf7+ ♔h8! 35 ♘xg6+ ♔g8 36 d6!? ♖b1+ 37 ♖f1 discover+ ♔g7 and white is lost! Wonder if this was what Garry's long think was all about.
Feb-19-04  Catfriend: <tamar> Thank you very much! It was amasing! 33..{Q:Rh4!! 34.♖:f7+!! ♔h8! 35.♘:g6+ ♔g8 36.d6 ♖b1+ 37.♖f1+ ♔g7 38.♖:♖b1 ♕h5 39.♕d4+ ♔:♘g6 40.♕e4+ ♔g7 really kills white! So it seems that it's draw again... Thank you again:)

tamar: It is not very often you can give your opponent two free checks, the second forking ♔ and ♕, and walk away with a won position. Someone check the below variations if you would.
Feb-19-04  Catfriend: I did it now:) It's right, according to chessmaster.
Feb-19-04  Benjamin Lau: Refutor, I never said Shirov called himself Tal, I said that Shirov enjoys playing like a stereotypical Tal, but I don't think Tal would reall play that unsound, in fact I believe most of Tal's sacrifices to be sound.
Feb-19-04  refutor: <benjamin lau> ok...you make it sound like shirov just closes his eyes and sacrifices unsoundly, and i don't believe that's the case
Feb-19-04  Benjamin Lau: Of course Shirov doesn't close his eyes, he just places a huge degree of trust in his intuition, but I don't know if his record of intuitional sacrifices supports this kind of style... Do you really think that all his sacrifices are unsound, and that it's only his continuations that are incorrect?
Feb-19-04  Benjamin Lau: Ooops, I meant "do you really think that all of his sacrifices are sound"
Feb-19-04  PinkPanther: <Benjamin Lau>
Sound in terms of playing against a human or a computer? I'd be willing to bet that against a computer most of his sacrifices would have been entirely refuted.
Feb-19-04  Benjamin Lau: PP, I dunno, but how well have his sacrifices done against the top 10? The vast majority of the sacrifices against Kasparov haven't worked. I only remember a couple against Kramnik that scored big time. I haven't looked very much at his games with Chucky, Adams, etc though. Do his sacrifices, if they exist, work?
