Kibitzer's Corner
May-14-08  Judah: A delicate endgame. White technically has a draw by perpetual check, but he has to play carefully to make sure that Black does not escape it, e.g. by blocking a check with his Queen and forcing a Queen exchange with a fork or a skewer. White needs to keep a bit of distance with his Queen, to keep as many checks open to him as possible. With 88.Qf4+, White ventured too close in: after Black's response Ke1, White cannot keep up the checks much longer without being forced to exchange Queens.

The more standoffish 88.Qg5+ would have continued to hold the draw, by enabling White to answer ...Ke1 with Qg1, forcing Black's King away from the pivotal e1-h4 diagonal without allowing Black's Queen to interfere.

Jan-07-16  SeanAzarin: The Second Saladin
