Sep-09-04  Jesuitic Calvinist: A neat finish (I would love to be able to say "surreal" but it is not quite justified - sorry, Marcel).

81.Rc8+ is the sort of trick that would be missable in a game, but it concluded things quickly here. The threat of 84.a7# is decisive.

tpstar: <Jesuitic Calvinist> Thank you very much for pointing out this game featuring the handy endgame trick 81. Rc8+! trading down, then the coupe de grace 83. Kb6! finishing it off (since 83. bxc8=Q+? draws). Do you see any improvements for Black who went from a Pawn up early endgame to a 2 Pawn down late endgame? Thank you.
Sep-09-04  Jesuitic Calvinist: TP, my impression when I first played over the game was that Devos (white) had the better game from early on, even when he was a pawn down. He seemed to play deliberately for that position a pawn down, in fact.

Speaking very generally, I think that Black had significant problems and probably could not avoid ending up at least a pawn down in the ending. The mobility of white's pieces was too superior.

tpstar: <JC> Golly, thanks for the quick response! I think it's just great how we have this nice, safe, friendly forum where beginners and amateurs who don't understand chess (like myself) interact with Grandmasters and professionals who have accomplished anything of note (like yourself). It's so important to be courteous, considerate and encouraging toward us eager students and inexperienced enthusiasts who love the game and strive to improve. We can even applaud our noble chess heroes, saluting their fine skill and lauding their great achievements with positive comments and helpful remarks, without ever resorting to bitterness, anger or spite. U.N.I.T.Y., bro.
