May-31-15  wooden nickel: Many options to try on this wonderful Sunday puzzle. Although not all forced, this line looks interesting: 25.Ng4
If 25... fxe3 then 26.Qd5 Qxd5 27.Rxc8+ Kf7 28. Rxd7+ Ke6 29. Re7+ Kf5 30. Nxe3+

25... O-O looks safer for Black but still good for White. One deficiency of puzzles is not knowing the right to castle for either side without peeking at the game with a viewer... By the way, my compliments to CG for the improved link to the default viewer pgn4web, since a few weeks ago, it directly leads to the puzzle position.

Penguincw: Damn it, I thought 25.Rc7 was the answer, but I missed 25...fxe3 (and also the fact the rook is hanging).

Ugh, 0/7 this week, what a tough week. At least tomorrow is Monday...

May-31-15  MindCtrol9: The first 2 moves are not bad to see where White with a great concept of what having the initiative is exchanged the Rook by Bishop with check, then centralizing the Queen threatening to get the Black Queen.I like this puzzle where you see that on move 42 Black can resign due to the lack of coordination of the pieces he had on the board.
May-31-15  Clodhopper: It's just amazing the amount of massive talent - Like Grigory Serper - who are still out there but you hardly ever hear about these days.
May-31-15  patzer2: One surprising aspect of today's Sunday puzzle solution 25. Rxc8+! is it's a follow-up to a combination begin with the strong move 21. Bb5!, which first appeared here (21. ?) as a Friday (i.e. June 17, 2011) puzzle.

As a general rule, the initial moves in a long combination are more difficult to find than the later follow-up moves.

Does this mean today's Sunday puzzle (25. ?) solution is less difficult than the Friday puzzle (21. ?) combination setting it up four years ago?

If it's a trend, maybe I've got a shot at solving a few more weekend puzzles this year.

P.S.: Black's best chance at improvement in this game appears to be the missed opportunity 11...h5! when play might continue 12. Nf1 Qc7 13. Qd2 Nf8! (-0.70 @ 26 depth, Deep Fritz 14x64).

Jimfromprovidence: How about 29...Qa6+?! This forces 30 Kxf2; now comes 30...Qe2+?!

Next comes 31 Kxe2 Nf4+ 32 Kf2 Nxe6 and when the dust clears we have this position.

It it white to play and win in this side puzzle.

May-31-15  patzer2: The real fire works in this game begin with 17. Nd5!!

Now (17. ?) would make for an interesting Sunday puzzle. I don't know if 17. Nd5! a forced win, but it's surely a sound positional sacrifice that gives White excellent winning chances.

Phony Benoni: <jith1207: This month I have solved more Sunday puzzles than some of the mid-week puzzles. Sometimes I have missed Tuesday puzzles, may be often this month. It gives more satisfaction to be this way though, hope next month I can be even better.>

To each their own. Personally, I'm happy solving Monday and Tuesday puzzles. That's a useful skill, since those are the types of positions we see in almost every game.

We might reach one Sunday puzzle position in a lifetime. And we'd probably botch it.

May-31-15  patzer2: <Jimfromprovidence> Nice puzzle position (i.e. final diagram in your post above) after 29...Qa6+ 30. Kxf2 Qe2 31. Kxe2 Nf4+ 32. Kf2 Nxe6.

I saw 33. c6! easy enough, but missed 33...Kg8 34. Re7! (not 34. c7?? Kh7! ) 34...Bf8 35. Re8 Kf7 36. d7 g5 37. Rxe6 Be7 38. Rh6! Rxh6 39. c7! (diagram below):

May-31-15  Moszkowski012273: I gotta meet this guy.....
May-31-15  houtenton: Again: when you know there must be a winning line, the two basic moves Rxc6 and Qd5 "must be the solution", even more by absence of other acceptable moves. At least that is how I "solve" them most of the time. So I found the first two moves easely based on the priciple above. OK, I sometimes also miss the easy problem of tuesday too.

Then I thought 27.c6 will win quickly, and that finish my work for today (to early maybe).

May-31-15  houtenton: I'm sorry: Rxc6 must be Rxc8 of course.
So: 25.Rxc8 Qxc8 26.Qd5 fe3 27.Nd3 and what can black do? Threat now is 28.c6: Nd7 cannot step away because of Qf7+ and Qe7#.
May-31-15  vajeer: Would 26. Rc7 followed by c6 win too?
May-31-15  houtenton: <vajeer> At the first view it looks like your line (26.Rc7 followed by c6) and my line are winning easier than in the game. No time anymore to work it out. Maybe <patzer2> will still help us in the last hour of the day.
May-31-15  Pedro Fernandez: Hey <Chris>, this puzzle is almost impossible to solve on terms Serper did. At the puzzle position one sees clearly that white possesses a superior position. For instance, 25.Qxb4 "should win" too, and if 25...fxe3 then 26.Qxh4 threatening mate at e7, etc. However if black side can do ...0-0! my variation doesn't work. At first glance I didn't like 25.Rxc8+! since the black bishop on 'c8' is pinned.
Dec-09-15  Lamateur: Impressive game by serper !
Dec-09-15  Shams: From Page 1 of the kibitzing:

<acirce> <It's funny as a curiosity but not much more than that.>

I hope ol' Ulf has learned to have fun, wherever he is!

Jul-11-16  todicav23: White basically sacrificed all his pieces, except the queen.

I haven't analyzed the game to see if the whole "concept" is sound, but this must be one of the most impressive games ever played by a human chess player.

Jul-12-16  todicav23: Actually white also sacrificed the queen in the end, although you can say that it is not a real sacrifice because a new white queen appeared on the board immediately.

Here is the analysis of the game:

http://en.chessbase.com/post/joys-o...

Does anyone know any other game where a player made so many sacrifices?

Jul-12-16  FairyPromotion: <todicav23: Does anyone know any other game where a player made so many sacrifices?>

This is the closest that I'm aware of:
G Mahia vs Quinteros, 1980

There's always I Rogers vs G Milos, 1992, which became controversial in the Best Game competition at the 1992 Olympiad.

gezafan: Wow. Serper sacrifices every one of his pieces! How many times in chess history has this happened?
