Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-29-04  Eatman: Somewhat questionable choice of an opening by Lenier, who only needed a draw to advance, unless Najdorf is the only opening he knows (which I doubt). Practical choice would have been something like Petroff (see Akopian-Adams) .
Jun-30-04  eigis: Yes, very doubtfull decision. Maybe Dominguez don't know enough Petrov, but why not the old-good 8...Qc7 9.O-O-O Nbd7, approved by Fisher, Tal? (Tal=Fisher,Zuerich-59; Keres<-Fisher,Bled-59,r1; Smyslov<-Fisher,Bled-59,r28; Euwe=Tal,1961,corr; Spassky=Fisher,Reikyavik-72,r15)...
Jun-30-04  acirce: I'm sure he had his reasons, just because you have learned that the Petrov is considered solid and more draw-apt it doesn't mean it would have been the correct choice in this particular case.
Jun-30-04  themindset: 8...Qa5 seems like an effort at catching Radja off-guard in the opening, but i see very little actual advantage to playing that rather than the main line.
Jul-01-04  eigis: Other cubanos-Quezada was beaten few month ago in Mexico after 8...Qa5 (Luther->Quezada,Merida-2003.12.17). Maybe Dominguez prepared improvement? But Radjabov was first with novelity... Nevertheless, if Dominguez was responded 14... Qxe5 15.Nb5 O-O 16.Rxd7 axb5, he will had some advantage. But position - very sharp...
Jul-01-04  chesslllvr: Qb3!
Jul-01-04  WarehouseMan: Some of Blacks manuevers seem peculiar to me. Out of curiousity, just how posioned is the e5 pawn? Am I missing some unseen devastation in capturing the pawn with aspirations of castling?
Apr-06-06  zev22407: To WarehouseMan if black takes e5 white plays Q:b7 winning a piece.
Nov-07-07  PAWNTOEFOUR: zev22407......thanks,i was wondering the same thing to
