plang: With this move order 7..Bb4 was unusual and must have surprised Ponomariov. The move achieved some popularity after this game with the main line being 9 e5; Ponomariov's 9 Bd2!? has been repeated only a few times. 12..g6 had been played in Fernandez-Lakos Pamplona 2002 (game not included in this database); 12..gxf was new. 21..Bxd5?! 22 a3..Na2+ 23 Kd2! would have been awkward for Black. White was doing fine until 23 Rxd5?; the position would have remained complicated and unclear after 23 Qe5..Nb4. 25 Qe5 prevented 25..Ra3? due to 26 Qb8+..Ke7 27 Bxa3+ but after Pelletier's 25..f5! White was in deep trouble and did not recover.
