Dec-14-06  madlydeeply: "Best Move" Larry bites the dust in this sac-a-licious game by Rossolimo!! If any of you geniuses in chessgamesland can tell me how 17. a5 saves Rossi's bishop I would be very much obliged.

Phony Benoni: <madlydeply> I suppose that 17...cxd5 would be answered by 18.Rfc1, threatening the helpless bishop on c8. After 18...Kd8 (18...Bc5 19.Qxd5) White has various ways to increase the pressure (for instance, Qxd5 followed by Qc4), while Black seems to have little chance of untangling himself.

That's just my unaided brain talking. But when an ulrra-materialist such as Evans doesn't accept a sacrifice, it may be better than it looks!

May-08-15  ToTheDeath: This game resembles a throwback Evans gambit. One should never leave the king in the center against an attacking player as brilliant as Rossolimo.
Aug-30-17  sneaky pete: The game score may be inaccurate. In a Dutch game collection (Forgotten Chess Giants by Siep Postma) I found the move order 12.Qb3 Bc5 13.Nc3 .. and resignation after 28.Qc5+ ..

Postma gives some lines (from old sources) after 17... cxd5 18.Rfc1 Kd8 19.Ra4 ..

Now 19.. d2 20.Nxd2 Bxd2 21.Qb6+ is easy, but the main line is a gem: 19... Bc5 20.Qxd5 Ba3 21.a6 ..

Aug-30-17  wtpy: a5 was mistake Bf7 is much better.
Aug-30-17  dhotts: 17. Bxf7 was the preferred move by the computer; however, once 17.a5 was played the computer gave it a higher value for white, so indeed 17.a5 was the best move! or was it?
