Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-18-06  Bridgeburner: Overly patient manoevres in this game and it wasn't until move thirty that the first piece was captured.

Rubinstein was probably over respectful of his older opponent and could have played the thematic...b4 well before it was actually played, when a mass exchange of pieces left the position dead drawn:

A truly boring game.

Nov-10-07  Karpova: I doubt that he had too much respect - they played a match before (7-7 and not 5-5 as many think) to qualify for Kiev. Due to the drawn match both could go there.
Jan-24-13  Diglot: 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bf4 e6 4.e3 Bd6 5.Bg5 <5.Bg3 and 5.Ne5 are normative here> 5...Nbd7 6.Bd3 Be7 7.Bf4 <7.Nbd2 or 7.0–0 would seem to be more productive than moving this Bishop again!> 7...c5 8.c3 c4 9.Bc2 b5 10.Nbd2 Bb7 11.0–0 0–0 12.h3 Rc8 13.Rc1 a5 14.Re1 Qb6 15.Nf1 Rfe8 16.Ne5 Rcd8 17.Bh2 Bd6 18.Nd2 Qc7 19.f4 Ne4 20.Rf1 f5 <20...Nb6 is probably a better alternative> 21.Ndf3 Ndf6 22.Qe1 Re7 23.Bg3 Ba8 24.Bh4 Rf8 25.Qe2 Ree8 26.Be1 Bb7 <26...b4!> 27.Kh2 <27.a3 is needed to stop ...b4> 27...Ba6 <27...b4 is begging to be played> 28.Rg1 Rb8 29.Nd2 Rb6 30.g4 Nxd2 31.Bxd2 Ne4 32.Bxe4 <32.gxf5 to open up the kingside is probably a better idea> 32...fxe4 <Black possibly stands a little better here> 33.Rb1 <33.a3 is needed to stop ...b4> 33...Bxe5 <Black needs to maintain initiative with 33...b4 instead of simplifying> 34.fxe5 b4 35.Rgf1 Rxf1 36.Qxf1 bxc3 <36...Rb8 or 36...Qe7 is preferable rather than initiating a series of exchanges> 37.bxc3 Rxb1 38.Qxb1 Qb7 39.Qxb7 Bxb7 <No progress can be made for either side> ½–½
Jan-10-17  reti: Maybe, Salwe did not want to take an early draw.
