Jan-14-05  MidnightDuffer: This Vienna Variation is cited in Euwe's Judgement and Planning in Chess; the game is the exact same until move 17. ... e5 versus 17. ...Qd5 in the text followed by 18.Qh6 Rg8 19.Nf3 g5 20.h4 Rg6 21.Qf8+ Rg8 22.Qxf7 Qd7 23.Ne5 Qd2 24.Qxh7+ Kxh7 25.hxg5# 1-0 . I had to transcribe that from the descriptive, I hope that is right; it is too bad, I could not find a true game that this example in the book followed. Complicated!
Jan-14-05  aw1988: Draw!? White should be able to easily win this.
Jan-15-05  iron maiden: Really? How is he supposed to make progress?

  beatgiant: The game Alekhine vs Minos, 1945 went 14. e5 Nc6? 15. Nf5 1-0, but on 14. e5 Nd7 15. Nf5 Nxf6 16. Ne7+ Kh8 17. Qxc4, White probably has good winning chances compared to this game (Black doesn't get the passed pawn and has a knight instead of a bishop).
Jan-03-23  stone free or die: This game's position after 16...Kh8 is shown in Renaud & Kahn's <The Art of the Checkmate (1953)>.

They're unsure about the source of the game, connecting it to 1939 Antwerp-Buenos Aires route taken by the oceanliner Piriapolis (see G-65, p117).

1939 seems to be the hotbed debute for the opening - though there's also a 1934 corr game with Hans Muller exploring some of the same territory.

The 1941 game - Alekhine / Frank vs Bogoljubov / Pfaffenroth, 1941 - is also worth a consult. Black plays the best 12th move, 12...Bd7, there but still lost.

.

The book continues with 17.Rd1, whereas 17.Rc1 is engine-preferred at 24-ply.
