Sep-27-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: Outstanding pun.

For those who wonder how Gligoric could have played so pedestrianly, look at the date. He was 72 years old.

Yes - a very different player in his prime in the 60s/70s - the days of the Chess Informant and CL&R - and 64 and Shakhmaty .....

An Englishman: Good Evening: And another outstanding game title! Truly, CG contributors have gotten on quite a winning streak.

The game itself represents rather a decent demonstration of the insidious and invidious power of the Ruy Lopez. Black has such trouble shaking off White's minuscule advantage.

FSR: <Cheapo by the Dozen> Yes. Gligoric's play in this event made Novi Sad.

Breunor: The game was even until black gave up the pawn In The sequence 32 -35; black was fine off the opening. According to the computer he could have gotten compensation with aggressive queen moves, but he didn't have to lose the pawn.

Teyss: The pun, is it just about the alliteration in "p" or did I miss something?

<Breunor> Right. Maybe Black wanted to activate his f8 B and attack the immobilised backward c3 P but that did not work out.

Note the efficient work of the WQ. 48.Qf5! if 48...Bxc3 at last, 49.Qd7+ and 50.Qc6 wins. 74...Qe1+ and 75...Qb3 would have held a bit longer but it's lost anyhow.

<FSR> Funny! The fact we cannot amend our posts on CG also makes me sad ;-) Honestly would be handy at times.

Teyss: Coming back to key moments of the endgame cleanly played by White (disregarding Q checks to save time).

56.d6! not fearing Bxd6 57.Qxf6+ Kc7 or d7 58.Qxd6+ Qxd6 59.Bxd6 Kxd6 60.g4 wins.

57...Qd7 (Bxg3? 60.Qg8+ and Qxg3) Too early to exchange Queens: 58.Qxd7? Kxd7 draw since the d6 P will fall and the f6 P is still present.

69.Qe2! giving up the d7 P but avoiding counterplay. 69...Qxd7 is forced else 70.Qe8+ The b4 P is enough to win.

Sep-27-21  Brenin: <Teyss>: I think that the title is based on the tongue-twister and nursery rhyme "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers" (try saying that quickly), and the fact that for much of the endgame White, with such a temptingly alliterative name, possessed a pair of passed pawns to push towards promotion. One of the best titles I can recall here.

Teyss: <Brenin> Thanks, makes more sense with the tongue-twister. Good indeed. "much of the endgame": I recognise your sense of accuracy because White pushed another passed P towards the end but then "trio" wouldn't have fit the pun.

It only took 9 years! :)

Feb-18-23  thegoodanarchist: Supposedly, the toughest tongue twister in English is <The sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick>.

It's basically a medical report on Middle Eastern royalty and their livestock.
