Oct-12-04  Knight13: I don't get why White didn't resign on move 61. Nice try for White from move 61. Good game.
Jun-10-05  aw1988: <Knight13> It's amazing Timofeev managed to win at all. RB vs R is extremely drawish and here white even has an extra pawn.
Jun-10-05  TheSlid: Surely the pawns favour the side with the extra piece? In the finish White loses his pawn and the game.
Jun-10-05  aw1988: <TheSlid> Black has RB and 1 pawn, white has R and 2 pawns. Knight13 is talking about move 61.
Jun-10-05  TheSlid: Ah - I suppose it serves me right for being lazy and just looking at the final position. None the less the principle is the same - If you're winning, swap pieces, if you're losing swap pawns.
Jun-10-05  aw1988: Yes, but you have to admit RB vs R is almost completely drawn.
Jun-10-05  TheSlid: Do we see much of <Knight13> these days, or is he still doing his exams?
Jun-10-05  aw1988: Last post yesterday according to his profile.
Jun-10-05  TheSlid: <aw1988> Yes indeed, you are of course well versed in such things. All my games in this ending were drawn...

There was this game, played by correspondence, back in the 1600's against an Italian, I think he was called Giuoco Piano or something, went on for years, one of us died in the end, I think...

Jun-10-05  aw1988: Us? Do you mean someone from your nation?
Jun-10-05  TheSlid: Ha,ha <aw1988>
Jun-10-05  aw1988: What's the humor side of it? Sorry to be rude, but I don't get it.

plang: The idea of playing the Queens Gambit without Nc3 was still unusual at the time of this game but it became more popular as there was increased interest in avoiding mainline theory. In the draw Fridman- Frolyanov Cappelle-la-Grande, played earlier in the year, White had played 13 b3; 13 a4 was new. After 13..Bb7, giving the pawn back, Black was at least equal. 54 f4?, fixing his pawns, made his defense a lot more difficult; 54 f3 would have been better.
