Jan-23-05  suenteus po 147: I laughed out loud when I had this thought: "With Chekov's 41st move, having made it finally and safely to the time control, Kuligowski saw his last strategy for winning topple over with his king." Seriously, though, is this a premature resignation? I'm guessing not, because of the passed pawn. But aren't there at least drawing chances with the exchange of the queens, or are Black's kingside pawns too vulnerable?
Jan-23-05  azaris: Yes, it's lost. Very likely Chekhov sealed his 41st move, the teams analyzed the position and Kuligowski resigned the next day without resuming play.
Jan-23-05  suenteus po 147: <azaris> You're right! I didn't realize the date was 1975 for this game. When did they shift from adjournments to all-in-one-sitting play?

Honza Cervenka: <suenteus po 147, azaris> I doubt that there were any teams which could have analysed the position during eventual adjournment and it was not necessary. After exchange of the Queens which is almost forced white has easily won endgame being an exchange and (passed) Pawn up. I guess that black resigned because the time control had passed.
