 | | Honza Cervenka: Pretty attack. At the end of game white was probably in time troubles and so he repeated moves. |

 | | Korora: I saw the ♘ sac but got the wrong follow-up. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Found an at-best second-best line, 28.Rxh5. It wins a pawn, but that seems quite meh compared with the game. Unless someone can find a quick win after 28...Rh8. |
|
Nov-01-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: The king believes that many will find: 28. Rxh5 gxh5 29. Qg5+ Kh8 30. Qh6#. But B need not to accept the gift. For 28. Rxh5 Rh8 29. Rxh8 Qxh8 Now, W must not take the 2nd ♙: 30. Qxb4? Qh3 31. Qd2?? Rh8. Maybe, W must reply: 29. Qg3 Rxh5 30. Nxh5+ Kh7 31. Nf4 Qd4 32. e6 and the attack proceed. |
|
Nov-01-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: I didn't suspect to change the sac. In fact, since B is not forced to capture the ♖, it is not decisive. The other sac is pretty. On 33...Qh4 34. exf7 Qxg3 35. hxg3 Ra7 36. Qf6+ Kh7 37. Rf5... end. |
|
Nov-01-24 | | BxChess: <An Englishman:> I got stuck on the same first two moves: 28. Rxh5 Rh8 and could not find a decisive follow up. I didn't think to try the knight sacrifice as in the game. |
|
Nov-01-24 | | mel gibson: That was easy today - 3 major pieces and one minor piece bearing down on a defenseless King. Stockfish 17 says mate in 8:
28. Nxh5+
(28. Nxh5+ (1.Nxh5+ gxh5 2.Qg3+ Kh6 3.Rxh5+ Kxh5
4.Rxf5+ Kh6 5.Qh3+ Kg7 6.Qg4+ Qg5 7.Rxg5+ Kh6 8.Rh5+) +M8/68 16) |
|
Nov-01-24 | | Mayankk: Seems tricky at first glance. Black has a strong Bishop but nothing else in his repertoire for us to worry. White has an extremely well-placed Knight and can plan a mate once the pawn wall is destroyed. We have two candidates. 28 Rxh5 gxh5 29 Qg5+ is a quick mate but the followup is not clear if 28 Rxh5 Rh8. 28 Nxh5+ however seems more promisng. 28 ... gxh5 29 Rxh5 is deadly as the King has no escape from a Q-R mate. And retreating the King to g8 or h8 allows White to intrude anyways on the open h file, with mate soon. Easier than a typical Thursday. |

 | | Teyss: Cannot believe that (1) I found the right continuation (2) A GM didn't find it. Okay, as said above it's a bit easy for a Thursday and knowing it's a puzzle makes it simpler than being in time trouble. <28.Nxh5+> Check the checks first. I left 28.Rxh5 to look for afterwards, and then realised I didn't need it.
<28...gxh5> If the BK moves, the threat 29.Nf6+ Kg7 30.Rh7# forces Black to give up his Q with 29...Qxf6. Then SF says it's also mate but I didn't bother to calculate.
<29.Qg3+> This seemed more natural than Rg3+ as in the game to have the three heavy pieces on three different files, and knowing it's a puzzle I anticipated the following move.
<29...Kh6> Thanks to the e5 P the BK cannot escape via f6 which makes the POTD relatively easy.
<30.Rxh5+> The move I probably wouldn't have found OTB, which means I would have also missed the previous ones.
The rest follows as per <mel gibson>. |

Nov-01-24 | | vajeer: <Teyss: Side puzzle: without the e5 Pawn, does 28.Nxh5+ still work?> nice teaser puzzle I can think of - 28. Nxh5 gxh5 29. Qxf5
Now I don't see any defence for black |

Nov-02-24 | | tibone: What if 33...Be8? |
|
Nov-02-24 | | FM David H. Levin: <<tibone>: What if 33...Be8?> I surmise that the idea is to meet 34.Qf4+ Kh7 35.Qe5 by 35...f6, when the h5-square is held and the g7-square is shielded. But then White has 36.e7, click for larger viewwith mate forthcoming after 36...fxe5 37.exf8=Q. |
