An Englishman: Good Evening: Larsen found a clever swindle attempt in 37...e3. Anic did well to neutralize the counter.

martin moller: GM Bent Larsen drops a rook ! I´m not a good chessplayer, but was there not anything he could have done to prevent that ?

  Teyss: <An Englishman: Good Evening: Larsen found a clever swindle attempt in 37...e3.> Clever not sure, but swindle it is. 38.fxe3? Qxe3+ 39.Kh1 (39.Kg2?? Qf2+ 40.Kh1 or Kh3 Qxh2#) Qe4+ 40.Bg2 (40.Kg1? Qd4+ and ...Qxa1) Nf2+ 41.Kg1 Nh3+! 42.Bxh3 Qd4+ 43.Kf1 Qd3+ 44.Kg1 Qd4+ with perpetual.

Note here Black should resist the temptation of 43...Qxa1+ because of 44.Qe1 and if e.g. 44...Qxa4 White threatens the Kside with Qe2 and if 45...g6 to protect the h5 P, 46.fxg6+ wins R for B and White can push the b6 P.

  Teyss: Hi martin moller,

The a5 Rook cannot go anywhere, which makes one wonder why it got there in the first place. But then on move 33 Black's situation is already desperate with a cramped position and White's two strong connected passed Ps on the Qside. SF evaluates it as high as +8.1 at 33 ply.

May-15-24  goodevans: <martin moller> You have to go a long way back to get to a point when there was any reasonable alternative to dropping that R.

The seeds of Black's destruction were sown by <18...Na5?>. Black's game was already uncomfortable by then but after <19.b3> not only is the N useless out there but it was always potentially a target.

Black's last opportunity to safely bring that N back in from the cold came on move 24:

... but instead of 24...Nc6, Black blindly continued <24...Rc7?>. I think Black's fate was now inevitable.

Black's next few moves are forced and after the Ns get swapped off Black may have kept the material loss to a single pawn but White's Q-side connected passed pawns are monsters.

I for one can't see how they could have been stopped without serious material loss.

martin moller: <Teyss> and <goodevans> Thank you for the thorough analysis. I have played the game over many times thanks to you guys. Clearly this was not one of Larsens best games :-)
