May-06-05 | | soberknight: Carr crash |
May-10-05 | | Jaymthetactician: This Car has to be the biggest Patzer in the entire database. |
May-10-05 | | Jaymthetactician: I mean, black's trippled pawns and poor opening preperation is a joke, was this car 7 by any chance at the time? |
May-11-05 | | TheSlid: <tripppled> would have been amusing, if you like that sort of schoolboy humour. |
May-11-05
 | | tpstar: You down with PPP/Yeah you know me
Lowenthal's comments are hilarious, but Morphy won with flair. |
May-11-05 | | aw1988: Lol, I agree. The notes by Lowenthal are quite humerous. |
May-11-05 | | Jaymthetactician: Perhap's this game can be 2006's April Fool's Game? |
May-11-05 | | wmking40: Does anyone have a game collection of quiet moves like Morphy's Kf2? I find these kind of moves to be very difficult to see. |
May-12-05 | | Jaymthetactician: I don't know much about quiet moves, however, I may be able to load up some zugzag games and post them. |
Jan-07-08 | | JimmyVermeer: Philip Sergeant says that Morphy had a forced mate in 7 on his 20th move. In fact, it was a mate in 6:
20 Bh6+ Kxh6 21 Rh3+ Kg5 22 Rh5+ Kf4 23 Kf2 Rg8 24 g3+ Rxg3 25 hxg3# Perhaps what Sergeant meant to say was that Morphy had a mate in 7 on his 19th move:
19 Rf4 (Rf3 also works just as well) Kg7 20 Bh6+ Kxh6 21 Rh4+ Kg5 22 Rh5+ Kf4 23 Kf2 Rg8 24 g3+ Rxg3 25 hxg3# Carr didn't make the best possible move on his 18th turn. He could also have played Kg7, Rc8, Rd8, Re8, or Rg8, any one of which could have prolonged the game. And no, Jaymthetactician, I'm sure DOCTOR Carr wasn't 7 years old at the time. I gotta admit, he plays chess better than some people I know! |
Jan-07-08 | | JimmyVermeer: On Carr's 18th move, he should have played Kg7, Rc8, Rd8, or Rg8. Not Re8 as I stated in my previous kibitz. That would also have been bad. |
Oct-08-08 | | millert: I believe the name is George Shoobridge Carr who was an English mathematician. However, Phillip Sergeant states the name is Dr. Jabez Carr. Anyone know who is correct? |
Dec-29-08 | | YoungEd: Who did this guy think he was, Preston Ware? Regardless, it's always a treat to watch Morphy attack like this. |
Dec-29-08 | | Calli: By a technicality, it is neither. Its just Jabez Carr, he was not a doctor as far I know. Sergeant probably knew G.S. Carr who was active in chess from the late 19th century on. Jabez was his uncle, if memory serves. |
Jan-05-09 | | WhiteRook48: Morphy's blindfold skill is amazing! Carr got crashed! |
Aug-07-09 | | WhiteRook48: on Carr's first move he should have played 1...e5 |
Mar-25-11 | | Llawdogg: This is the first game in A First Book of Morphy.
Morphy is a little bit like Mary Tyler Moore here: you can take a nothing game and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile. |
Mar-25-11 | | Llawdogg: Wow! This was part of an eight game simultaneous blindfold exhibition in Birmingham, England. |
Mar-25-11 | | Llawdogg: 20 Bh6+! is a brilliant little sacrifice that really adds to the beauty of this game. 23 Kf2! simply, but powerfully, takes the opposition and sets up the inevitable checkmate. Morphy is amazing. |
Aug-24-13 | | cs1978: @Jaymthetactician: "I mean, black's trippled pawns and poor opening preperation is a joke, was this car 7 by any chance at the time?" No, Carr was 11, Morphy 21. Further, it is within this game that the 'Carr Defence' ( http://www.365chess.com/eco/B00_Car... ) is born. In defence of my ggg-uncle George. |
Aug-25-13
 | | offramp: How can your uncle be 11 years old? |
Oct-26-14 | | Ke2: In this game you see morphys default attacking setup against essentially no defense. Few players would make such a work of art from beating a patzer. Kasparovs simul games for instance are boring, he plays closed positions and maneuvers, winning a pawn and converting it on move 50, not to say his technique isn't iron. |
Oct-09-17 | | VGA: He tried to put pressure on the blindfolded master by playing an unorthodox opening instead of theory ... that didn't turn out well. Even after those useless pawn moves he developed the knight to f6, where he would *obviously* be kicked back, tsk tsk. |
Jul-05-20 | | Gab.pr: Philip W. Sergeant's book "Morphy's Games of Chess" clearly states that Morphy's opponent was Dr. Jabez Carr, a surgeon who was an uncle of George S. Carr, and co-founder in 1851 of the Leamington Chess Club. |

 | | MissScarlett: How clearly? |
