Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-11-05  patzer2: Although difficult to see OTB, Black's 22...h6? turned out to be a decisive mistake. Instead, it would appear Speelman could have held after 22...Bg6! 23.Bxb7 Bxh5 24.dxc5 Bxe2 25.Re1 Bc4 26.a3 Bd5 27.Bxc8 Rxc8 28.f4 Re8 29.Kf2 h6 30.Nf3 g5 31.axb4 (31.fxg5 Rf8=) 31...axb4 32.Ne5 gxf4 33.gxf4 Ra8=.

Although White seems to have gained a strong and ultimately decisive advantage with 26. Bxa8!?, Wells might have forced immediate resignation with the stronger 26. Rd1!!

Fritz 8 analyzes 26.Rd1!! Rf8 (26...Kf8 27.Rd3 Re8 28.Rf3+ Ke7 29.Bxa8 Rxa8 30.Qf7+ Kd6 31.Re3 ) 27.Rd3 Qd6 28.Qh7+ Kf7 29.Bxa8 Rxa8 30.Rf3+ Ke8 31.Qg8+ Kd7 32.Rf7+ Kc6 33.Qxa8+ Kb5 34.b3 (+12.69 @ 14 depth) with a clear win for White.
