May-10-05 | | Jaymthetactician: They played 1.b4 back then?! I would easily defeat Morphy with this. |
May-10-05 | | maoam: No, you wouldn't. |
May-10-05 | | Jaymthetactician: Yes I would! I have some modern literature on this opening, and would have a theoretical edge after 1.b4,Nf6 2.Bb2,e6 2.a3, any |
May-10-05 | | Shams: your theoretical edge and a dollar-fifty would buy you a cup of coffee, for you to drink while you stare at your hopelessly lost position. besides, the best anti-1.b4 scheme is 1...d5 2.Bb2 Qd6! |
May-10-05 | | maoam: Assuming Morphy actually played your book line, you would <easily defeat> him? You're deluded on a scale I didn't imagine possible. |
May-10-05 | | Jaymthetactician: for you to drink while you stare at your hopelessly lost position. Hey! The Polish (1.b4) is well respected! And it wouldnt be hopeless yet! And besides, 3.c4 knock's the d pawn from the center, and then 4.e3, still not a bad idea though. |
May-10-05 | | Shams: if you think it's well-respected your literature is hardly modern. |

May-10-05 | | Jaymthetactician: Shams: if you think it's well-respected your literature is hardly modern. Well, it is very playable at the top level's |

May-10-05 | | maoam: <Well, it is very playable at the top level's> The top levels of coffee-house chess? |
May-10-05 | | WillC21: <jaym> You're rated 1092. Morphy could beat you without his queen. |
May-11-05 | | wmking40: WillC21, clearly you are unaware or Jaym's combonational abilities and theoretical knowledge. With his book knowledge and natural genius, I wouldn't be surprised if he could play on par with Capablanca or even the future world champion Kosteniuk for that matter. You definately should review some of his combonations from the games he has posted before making such outlandish statements. Also he has access to machenes and knows the hypermodern principles of Nimzo, these alone would give him an overwhelming decisive edge. Morphies openings are simply too weak. |
May-11-05 | | TheSlid: 1092 definitely sounds like a winemaker's specific gravity. |
May-11-05 | | Jaymthetactician: WmKing40: I too spelled combinations wrong, the grammar nazi's will be after you. Well, I am not on par with Capa or Kosteniuk yet, beside's, 1092 is not accurate, as no real 1092 would obtain advantage over a 1750 (and throw it away with a blitz tactic), and I moved very fast and applied blitz tactics in my games because I am too used to playing blitz. WillC21: <jaym> You're rated 1092P. Morphy could beat you without his queen. Actually, no one can beat me without a piece, as the side lacking a piece will go on to lose, as the advantage of an extra piece without compensation = victory for the holder of extra material. |
May-28-05 | | aw1988: 1. b4 is a very strong unorthodox move in the opening. I have gained a few pleasant victories with it when I'm not playing standard lines. 1. b4 is pretty good, but to beat Morphy with it is ridiculous. Beating Morphy has nothing to do with the opening and everything to do with what skill level you are. Don't be ridiculous. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Hey, he didn't specify <which> Morphy. Alonzo might be an open question, and there's always N.N. Morphy. |
Jan-22-08 | | MaxxLange: The rating system is totally broken: every player I have met says he is much stronger than his rating |
Jan-22-08 | | Jim Bartle: And he had a winning position but blew it. |
Jan-23-08
 | | Phony Benoni: <MaxxLange> My observations confirm that. i've played chess in a number of U.S. states--23 at last count--and in every single one people claim that players in their state are underrated as compared to other states. |
Jan-23-08 | | Jim Bartle: I should amend the above to "And he had winning positions against GM Whatzit and IM Whozit, but fell into cheap traps/got into time trouble/missed a tactic." |

Jan-24-08 | | Calli: Correct, I think is 1963.

Jan-27-08
 | | maxi: He was a good student of chess, but just couldn't muster up his courage. |
Jan-25-09 | | WhiteRook48: There's no way Morphy would play 1. b4. He'd play 1. e4 all the time |
