Honza Cervenka: 5.f4 is objectively bad move here, which is tactically busted by 5...0-0! with intention of immediate opening of the centre. For example, if 6.Nf3, then 6...d5! 7.Bxd5 Nxd5 8.exd5 exf4 9.dxc6 Re8 10.Ne5 Qd5 11.d4 Bxd4 12.cxd4 Qxd4 13.Be3 Qxe5 14.Nc3 fxe3 -+, or 6.d3 d5! 7.exd5 Re8 8.dxc6 exf4 etc. Neumann missed that but still he got the upper hand in the game and Anderssen was unable to equalize and consolidate his position after unsuccessful opening.

Open Defence: thanks <Honza> very instructive.

5.f4 was bad, I was looking at 4.c3 which though seen in the Bishops Opening and Italian Game is probably not quite the best here.

For example if White tried

5.Bb3 0-0 6.d3 a5 7.a4 h6 8.Nf3 d5 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.0-0 Be6 (now the weakness of b3 becomes apparent)

if 11.Nxe5 Nxc3 12.bxc3 Bxb3 13.Nxc6 bxc6 14.Be3 Re8 15.Nd2

Probably better was 4.Nf3
