Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-14-05  lentil: i don't understand this AT ALLL!! W leaves pieces and pawns hanging right and left. Why not 15. ...ef; or 17. ...Bxd4. anybody got any explanations?

<anybody got any explanations?> These look like positional sacrifices. In a line like 15...ef 16. Nxf3 Nd6 17. Bg5 Ne4 18. dxc5! Nxg5 19. Nxg5 and now 19...Bxa1? looks bad after 20. Qxa1+ Kg8 21. Qe5 etc. so White has two pawns, good piece activity, and a big central pawn mass for a piece.

On 17...Bxd4, White has 18. Nxe4 fxe4 19. Qxd4+ Kg8 20. Bb2 Kf7 21. Qg7+ Ke8 22. Ba3 with two pawns (may soon win more) plus a strong attack for a piece.

Maybe someone with a good chess engine can give you better answers. <Crafty>?
