Kibitzer's Corner
May-21-06  MUG: 7...a6 in the Modern Benoni is apparently growing in popularity and is called the 'Bronstein Variation'. The standard response to this for White is 8.a4. However, GM Daniel King is of the opinion that Vladimir Epishin's new reply, 8.Qe2, is much stronger.

<The basic idea is to catch the Black’s King in the middle after 8…Bg7 9.e5 dxe5 10.Qxe5+. In the game Epishin-Cheparinov 2004, Black tried 10…Kf8, but after 11.Be2 h6 12.0-0 Kg8 13.a4 Kh7 14.Bc4 Re8 15.Qf4, it was clear that he had lost too much time by his king moves. White’s initiative persisted. Instead, 10…Qe7 11.Qxe7+ Kxe7 does not solve the problems. Black must still waste time evacuating the king.

Other players have instead tried 8…Bg4 to inflict some damage on White’s pawn structure. But the ending that follows after 9.e5 Bxf3 10.gxf3 dxe5 11.Qxe5+ Qe7 is not completely satisfactory. – King>

It looks like a serious improvement is needed from Black or the otherwise trusty Bronstein variation could be discarded to the great theoretical scrap-heap. - King>

J Rowson vs C Ward, 2005

Does anyone agree with Daniel King, or can the Bronstein variation be saved? Why not 16…Rc8 here, to try to remove the troublesome White bishop and pawn (eg. 17.Nd5 Nhf6), or 16…Bxc7 17.dxc7 Rc8?
