Sep-17-05  Norman Glaides: Whatever was Mondo doing playing in the Cambridge University knockout championships? Very, very nice win by the way. Extremely elegant and pre-dating Karpov-Miles by more than a decade.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Hypermodern chess at its best. Note that Black never moved the e-pawn.

I also played 1...a6 and 2...d6 in a tournament game, and believe it or not, my opponent's play was even more passive!

6.a3 was quite passive. 6.a4,b4; 7.Na2 and Black will have to cope with a few weak light squares on the Queen side and a foul-tempered Bishop on c4. After the best move, 7...Bb7!, White will have to play 8.Bd3, but can follow with Qe2, Bd2, Nc1, c2-c3, Bc4 and e4-e5, not necessarily in that order.

Oct-19-05  Norman Glaides: Yeah, 6.a3 was a bit of a waste of time really. I played 1...e6 and 2...a6 recently in the Bury St Edmunds chess congress and agreed a draw in a clearly won position because I was so tired. The power of an early ...a6 cannot be underestimated!

Oct-20-05  Norman Glaides: Oh sorry - I thought you went to Oxford. Now I remember clearly that you didn't.
